Shichen (right Time) Steamed Dumplings
The dumplings taste fragrant, fresh but not greasy. The history of making steamed dumplings in Weinan dates back to the 18th century. However, they were not called Shichen Steamed Dumplings until 1903 when a man named Zhang Kun began to make and sell steamed dumplings. His steamed dumplings were so delicious that many people stood in line to buy them. The steamed dumplings were sold out after 10 o’clock every morning. So people called them “right time” steamed dumplings because they should go early there to buy them. The steamed dumplings are in the shape of a monk’s hat and the bottom part is golden.
Pucheng Steamed Mantou
Mantou is a staple food made from flour combined with leavening agent, and kneaded, shaped into usually round pieces and steamed. The steamed mantou made in Pucheng County is shaped into a rafter, so it also called “rafter mantou”. It is a popular local food that has a history of 200 years. It is said that in the ancient time the local officials often gave the steamed mantou as a tribute to the royal family or some important officials. Pucheng steamed mantou also sells well in other provinces. The making of the steamed mantou is also special as people do not use soda as the leavening agent and the fermentation is a strictly controlled process. Pucheng steamed mantou is convenient to take along and preserve. So it is not only good to entertain the guests but also is nice present for people.
Crystal Baked Pie
The crystal steamed cake is a famous local snack. The cake got its name because the stuffing is as translucent and glittering as a crystal. In Song Dynasty (960-1279), the crystal baked pie enjoyed equal popularity as the esculent swift’s nest, tremella, and even Jinhua ham (Produced in Jinjhua City in Zhejiang Province, it is one of the best bacon products in China). The major ingredients are wheat flour, fine white sugar, crystal sugar, lard and sweet-scented osmanthus flower. The crystal baked pie looks golden. It tastes fragrant and cool, and it is also very nutritious. Letian Brand crystal baked pie is the best produced in Weinan City. The pie looks elegant and tastes as fragrant as rose flowers but not greasy. Anyway, it makes superior presents for the friends.
Cooked Beef Or Mutton Soaked In Soup
As a traditional snack popular in Weinan, the cooked beef or mutton soaked in soup is fresh, nutritious and delicious. The major ingredients include the local beef or mutton, fine vermicelli (made from bean starch), garlic sprout, some spices, salt, alum and melted suet. The snack is done after five procedures. When people eat it, they add some mashed garlic, caraway, chili and sesame oil. After they finish the food, they will have a bowl of thin soup made of the original broth and fine vermicelli.
Dali Cooked Zhouzi (upper Part Of A Leg Of Pork)
It is a traditional snack in Dali County. The materials for the dish are the upper part of a leg of pork with bone and some Chinese spices such as cinnamon, lilac, and so on. Dali Cooked Zhouzi looks purplish red and is oval. The completely stewed meat is fleshy, delicious but not greasy. And the lean meat is not tough but very smooth and pleasant. In a word, this snack is delicious and specially flavored.
