Aibi means “turn towards the sun” in Mongolian. Aibi Lake is the largest lake in the Junggar Basin and the second largest salt-water lake in Sinkiang. The main sources of Aibi Lake are Boer Tala River, Jing River and Kuitun River, which separately flow from the west, south and east and then converge into Aibi Lake.
Aibi Lake covers an area of six hundred square kilometers. The average depth is about two meters and it is one hundred and eighty-nine meters above sea level. The lake has abundant nonmetal mineral resources such as salt, saltpeter, bitter salt, boron, bromine, iodine, etc. and it is an important producing area of salt and saltpeter in Boer Tala Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture. Early in the Guangxu 28th year of Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) that is in the year of 1902 the Qing Government launched salt industry here under the system of “government officials do the superintendence while the businessmen do the salt industry”. In the years of the Republic of China (1912-1949), the salt industry also flourished here.
The unique marsh entironment of Aibi Lake is an ideal place for hundreds of animals and plants to live and multiply. In the season of Aves’ multiply and migration, tens of thousands of water birds, such as swans, wide gooses, widgeons etc. get together in Aibi Lake. Along with the popple of lake, weeping loud of the water birds, the swing of bulrush and the fragrance of flowers Aibi is an ideal place for tourists. In the east of Aibi Lake lies wide wild forest region, in which plant, such as clusters of bai suosuo, red willow, divisified-leaved poplar, carnation, violet etc. stand in vivid contrast against the around boundless Gobi. And this beautiful scene deserves the title “the bright pearl in the Junggar Desert”. Aibi Lake also boasts abundance of halogenate worm spawns. And the output of halogenate worm and halogenate worm spawn rank first in saline at home.
In June 2006, the Sinkiang Municipality Pepole’s Government authorized the establishment of Aibi Lake Marsh Natural Reserve. It covers an area of 2670 square kilometers. There are many natural beauties, such as water area, marsh, meadow and so on. And Aibi Lake is its center. Most of the regions remain aboriginality because of its vast territory with a sparse population. At the present time, more than three hundred plants, one hundred and sixty vertebrate and one hundred Aves and ten fish have been found out. In addition, there are thirty-eight animals are listed as rare animals at national class. It has always been regarded as an indispensable part in our nation’s biology variety and one of the natural gene storerooms. As a result, it is called “the green maze” in drought area. The mysterious and original hungriness tour resources are fascinating to tourists.
