Kizilsu Kirgiz Autonomous Prefecture, or Kizilsu, for short, is located in the western part of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, or Xinjiang, for short, where the region - and also Kizilsu - borders with Tajikistan to the west-southwest and with Kyrgyzstan to the west-northwest. To the northeast, Kizilsu borders with Aksu Prefecture and with Kashgar Prefecture to the east and southeast.
Kizilsu is roughly in the shape of a not-very-neat "C" (perhaps more of a "V" rotated 90 degrees to the right). The indent on the right side is where Kashgar Prefecture reaches into what might otherwise be Kizilsu territory in order to embrace the ancient Silk Road city of Kashgar.
