The home of Diaochan is in Muzhi Village, three kilometers southeast of Xinzhou City. Zhi Village was wealthy in edible tree fungus, hence it got the name Muer Village; the village renamed Muzhi Village for discovering a millenarian ganoerma lucidum under a locus tree in the village. It was said that peach trees and almonds in the village hadn’t blossomed for three years before Diaochan was born; and until now, peach trees and almonds are not easy to survive. It is because Diaochan’s beauty which outshines the moon and shames the flowers. There once were decorated archways, front hall, back hall, Wangyun Street, Diaochan Stage and Diaochan Tomb. With the time flies, these buildings have ruined and the burial mound of Diaochan has been razed in catastrophes. Some ancient bricks, stone structural components, copper coins are often excavated from the site. It is said that they have relations with Diaochan.
The scenic spot is called Diaochan Cemetery and it was rebuilt by villagers in the former address in recent years. It is located in the southwest of the village, covering an area of more than 4,000 square kilometers and surrounded by waved walls which are red with yellow titles. Diaochan Cemetery is bright in color amid a sea of wheat. A tablet inscribed with “Diaochan Cemetery” is hung on the door eaves and a couplet is on the both sides of the door “Chinese are proud of her beauty which outshines the moon and shames the flowers, her suffering disgrace and insults for her county even make male respect her”. Baiyue Pavilion and Fengyi Pavilion are built in the north yard of Diaochan Cemetery; a bluestone tomb is built at the back of the cemetery; a statue and a tomb stone of Diaochan stand in front of the tomb; the statue looks coquettish with drift ribbons. There are over 20 rooms of pseudo-classic style to use as painted sculpture gallery to reflect her earth-shaking lifetime.
Brief Introduction of Diaochan
Though there is not clear record in old books, Diaochan is one of beauties in ancient China. She is an important figure in the disputes of the Three Kingdoms in the end of Han Dynasty from the descriptions of many literatures. Luoguanzhong further described Diaochan in his book The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which produces biggish influence; the folklore about Diaochan is more moving, who has become a well-known “female hero”. The following has been verified by scholar-Mengfanren: the surname of Diaochan is Ren, her name is Hongchang, she was born in Muer Village, Jiuyuan County of Bingzhou Jun; she was selected into palace at 15 to manage courtiers’ Diaochang Guan (the hats of courtiers in the Han Dynasty), hence she got the name-Diaochang. At the end of the Han dynasty, the ebb and flow of politics in the royal court happened; Diaochan went out of the palace and was adopted as goddaughter by Situ Wangyun. Soon afterwards Dongzuo came to power monopolistically; Wangyun made use of the weakness of Dongzuo and Lvbu-lechery and sent Diaochan to carry out the stratagem-Lianhuanji (coordinating one stratagem with another) to kill Dongzuo with the hand of Lvbu. Soon Diaochan became the concubine of Lvbu. After Lvbu was killed in Baimen Pavilion, Caocao carried out Lianhuanji again to send Diaochan to Guanyu. Diaochan wanted to commit suicide with a sword in order to not harm brothers of peach garden (Liubei, Guanyu and Zhangfei), however, she was saved by Guanyu and then she became a nut. Caocao got the news to hunt her. At last, she killed herself with a sword.
