Xishuangbanna is located at the ultmost southeast part of China . It is not only the major passageway and base to Southeast Asia and south Asia, but  a window of Yunnan province opened to the world. 

Xishangbanna Region covers an area of 19,124.5 square kilometers with an population of 840,000 including Dai, Hani, Lahu, Blang, Jinuo and nine other ethnic groups. Xishuangbanna has jurisdiction over Jinghong, Menghai, Mengla and 11 state-runned farms. Its boundary line reaches 966.29 kilometers, 677.8 kilometers with Laos and 288.49 kilometers with Burma. There are three state ports, one provincial port, and six highways, one river connecting with Laos and Burma.

The Dai minority makes up 28.8% of the population, Han 25%, Hani 19.04%, the rest 24.76. The Dai People and Bulang people believe in Buddhism. There are 500 temples, 150 pagodas and 5,000 monks with 84,000 Buddhist Scriptures in store.

In Xishuangbanna the largest equatorial rainforest ecosystem is well kept.  The region is hence renowned as the world's rare" species gene pool".

Since the Tertiary Period, Xishuangbanna has been in the tropical region.  The paleobiocenosist was able to develop and evolve without being devastated by the glacier moving southward. There are botanic 20,000 species. 5,000 of which are advanced plants making up one sixth of the total in the country.  Rare kinds reach 300 and some under state special protection include tree fern, hip-liked fruit, wooden lotus, chicken feather tree, cycad. These plants have lived and multiplied on this land foir more than one million years. They are the "living fossils" in China.

The Capital City of Xishuangbanna: Jinghong

Jinghong City, located in central Xishuangbanna Dai Minority Autonomous Prefecture, south of Yunnan Province, is the capital city of Xishuangbanna Autonomous Prefecture. Jinghong is a frontier city with subtropical scenery and rich national characteristic. It has a history of over 800 years and a population of about 40,000. With a total area of 7003.1 square kilometers, the forest coverage of Jinghong is 66.16%. It’s also the main passageway and hub for economic and cultural exchanges between China and Southeast Asian countries. In Jinghong, there are nine ethnic minorities and the population of ethnic minorities accounts for 63.2% of the total population. Lancan River, which is called the oriental Danube River, flows through Jinghong City, boasting beautiful scenery. Jinghong City, with the scenic area of 49.45 square kilometers, which is the center of Xishuangbanna Scenic Area, is a well-known tourist attraction all over the world with abundant culture relics and tourism interests. Jinghong is cataloged in the first set of Excellent Tourism City in China, attracting more than 2 million tourists every year. Jinghong has the national level nature protection area of 1.55 million mu, containing rare and precious animals and plants. As one of the few producers of tropical fruits in China, the favorable natural environment and advantageous climate of Jinghong provide good conditions for planting and producing tropical fruits. There are a great variety of wild fruits in Jinghonh. People can enjoy pollution-free and fresh fruits in four seasons no matter when they go to Jinghong. On both sides of the road, there stand lots of tropical fruit trees, such as coconut trees and areca trees, which show a magnificent prospect of tropical scenery. Besides, a variety of buildings with distinctive national and local characteristics impress people a lot.
