Puppet Show, Yangzhou

Yangzhou is reputed as “Village of Puppet Show”. The Zhangtou Puppet Show is as well known as Thread Hold Puppet Show in Quanzhou, and Cloth Pocket Puppet Show in Zhangzhou. Zhangtou Puppet Show, known as Three Sticks, is performed with three sticks. One of the stick is used to support puppet and is therefore called mianbang stick or Main Stick. The mouth, eyes, nose, and ears can move; the eyeballs can turn vividly like live persons; its head can move flexibly on the neck. The other two sticks are used to control the two hands of puppets. During the puppet performance, the controller of the puppet can proficiently move the sticks agilely and appropriately so as to let the puppet make expected movements. The accompany music of the puppet show has, on the basis of Peking Opera, widely absorbed nutrition from the melody of local opera and excellent folk songs.
