Xiata in Zhaosu County of Yili autonomous prefecture is a place full of legends. The place is close to the main branch of Tianshan Mountain which has many high peaks. Xiata River, which has its origin in the high mountains, divided the grassland there into two parts.
At last, the water of Xiata River flows into Tekes River. The grassland there is very flat. The fragrant grass there is luxuriant, and the paths crisscrossed in the fields. Houses and gardens there are in lines. Rows of mausoleums scatter in the valley. The huge mausoleums look like small hills. A flat highway which is made of sands crosses the grassland in front of the mountain and it stretches to the not far borderline. In history, the place used to be post station. Nobody knows what this place was called in ancient time. However, in Qing dynasty, the place was called Sha Tu Aman station. Sha Tu Aman in Mongolian means stairs. The word Xiata comes from Sha Tu.
The beautiful and magical Xiata still keeps many relics of ancient roads. The relic of the military station situates in the mouth of the valley can still be seen. The different groups of ancient mausoleums make it possible for people to imagine the human activities there from Wusun people, West Tujue people to peoples there in Qing dynasty. When you walk along Xaita River down, you will find a mysterious ancient relic---Xiata ancient city.
In the plain grassland there are also many stone statues. When you enter into Xiata valley, you will see a newly built road. It is said that the road was built for those who take hot spring bath there. Along the newly built road, sometimes you will see the relics of stairs made in ancient time at some precipitous places. The most valuable thing is that there is a white stone situates in the roadside not far from the mouth of the valley. The stone is as large as a tabletop. It looks like a Bodhisattva sitting cross-legged. So it is called Bodhisattva Stone. On the surface of the stone Uygur words and badge which stands for Xinjiang Revolution are carved.
Xiata keeps intact because of its remoteness. It is also a paradise for wild animals. Squirrels, woodchucks, snow rabbits, and wild chickens can be seen anywhere. Sometimes, red deer, and snow leopards can be seen there. Xiata hot spring is only 30 kilometers from Xiata valley. The hot spring lies in the depth of the valley and it faces crystal like Muzhaerte peaks. The icy peaks are always surrounded by clouds and there is a nip in the air.
