Shanjuan Cave is a famous fantastic limestone cave on Luoyan Mountain in Zhuling Village of Yixing City, about 25 kilometers away from the southwest of Yixing City. Shanjuan Cave is 800 meters long with the total area of 5,000 square meters, consisting of four caves, including the upper cave, the middle cave, the lower cave and the back cave which are passable to each other. Especially in the water cave which is 120 meters long, tourists can enjoy boating there. The entrance to the cave is at the middle cave which has the area of 1,000 square meters and the 7-meter-tall stalactites stand at the entrance. Entering into the cave, tourists will feel as if being in a magical underground palace. A large number of various stone pillars and stalactites abound in the cave and the cave is also decorated with colored lighting. Through history, the spectacular natural landscape of the cave has been glorified in Chinese stories and poetry written by numerous poets who had been there.

Shanjuan Cave has been regarded as a mysterious limestone cave in Jiangsu Province and even in China. According to the legend, there was a man called Shan Juan who renounced the world and lived alone in the cave over 4,000 years ago. After that, the cave was named after the recluse and has been called Shanjuan Cave from then now.

The Middle Cave: As the entrance to the cave is at the middle cave, while entering the cave, tourists will see a large and spacious stone hall with the area of 1,000 square meters and there are the 7-meter-tall stalactites with a history of about 30,000 years standing at the entrance. On both sides of the stone cave, there stands a pair of huge stones like a lion and an elephant which are vivid and magnificent. The large stone hall, which is large enough to hold thousands of tourists at a time, is called “The Lion and Elephant Hall” by local people.

The Upper Cave: The upper cave, which is 70 meters long, 30 meters wide and 30 meters tall, looks like a shell and is much larger than the middle cave. It is wrapped in midst all the year round. The upper cave is also called “The Warm Cave” because it’s fairly warm in winter and rather cool in summer with the temperature of 23°C throughout the year. In the wall of the cave, there are a variety of scenery formed by unique stones, such as pandas, sheep and lotuses.

The Lower Cave and the Water Cave: The lower cave and the water cave are the most magnificent and characteristic caves in Shanjuan Cave. The lower cave is 180 meters long, 18 meters wide and 22 meters tall. It is also called “Waterfall Cave” because there forms a spectacular waterfall outside the cave after the heavy rain, due to the six-meter-high escarpment outside the cave. The water cave is an ancient underground rive with the length of 120 meters and the depth of 4.5 meters. Tourists can take pleasure boats there all the year round.

The Back Cave: The back cave is connected to the Water Cave with the length of 120 meters long, the width of 6 meters and the depth of 4.5 meters.
