Mt. Shibaoshan

Mt. Shibaoshan, a kind of Danxia landform, lies in the southwest of Jianchuan County, 25 kilometers away from the centre of the county. It got the name "Shibao" for the sake that the surfaces of the red rocks on the mountain look like the tortoise' s back, and they sometimes appear like lions, sometimes like elephants, and also like clocks. There are large areas of thriving and flourish trees, fantastic rocks, delicate temples and unique and picturesque scenes. Mt. Shibaoshan is especially famous for its grottos and statues on the cliff. The grotto, excavated in the mountain between the Tang and Song dynasties, has a reputation of "Dunhuang in the southwest", and has become the key national heritage conservation units. There are totally 17 grottos with delicate carving, vivid image, unique meaning and strong local ethnic features. They are distributed in the Shizhong Temple, Shiziguan and Shadengjing on the Mt. Shibaoshan, with about 140 statues.

Take a bus from to Jianchuan County, and then take another bus to Shaxi. The whole trip costs about 30 to 40 yuan.

The best time to visit Mt. Shibaoshan is at the end of the seventh month and the beginning of the eighth month in the lunar calendar. The annually traditional singing festival will impress you deeply.
