Kunming, a bustling prefecture-level city in the heart of Yunnan Province, is the province's capital. Kunming, whose name derives from the sound byte associated with the name of an ethnic group that lived in the area in ancient times, is nicknamed the "City of Eternal Spring" due to its mild, stable, year-round weather conditions. Kunming's previous name was simply Yunnanfu, or "Capital of Yunnan". As the capital city, Kunming is the political, cultural, and economic hub of the province, as well as the province's "communications" hub (i.e., "communication" defined in the broadest sense, to also include transportation). Not surprisingly, Kunming is the seat of many large corporations that operate in the region, and is as well, the seat of the provincial government. As the cultural hub of Yunnan Province,... "Not much to do, except for shopping"

Kunming is the average ugly chinese town, except for its shopping mall center. Not the worst city I've ever been in China, but not much to do either. The mosques are so kitschy I wondered if anyone was really praying in there...

Stayed at the KinOne Hotel on Dongfeng Road 2 blocks south of central plaza. Ok, to me....the hotel was GREAT!!!!! But I am not rich, nor do I like 5star hotels. I prefer 1 to 4 star hotels because they try harder and they employ regular people who REALLY try to make your stay enjoyable. The KinOne hotel has an EXCELLENT breakfast everyday! Free breakfast, that is, with a selection of more than 15 different items, including fresh fruit, hot cereal, eggs, and more. It also has a rooftop garden area, with a stream and waterfall, ...that no one seemed to no about. I mean, I stayed at this hotel for 3 weeks, and every morning after breakfast I would go to the rooftop garden and kick back looking at the views of the city, drinking my coffee (yes the cooks made coffee special for me every day) and gearing up for another excellent day in Yunnan!!!
