Kunming Institute of Bontany

The Kunming Institute of Bontany is an important window of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to Southeast Asia and the Himalayas. It focuses on comprehensive multi-disciplinary research on the biodiversity and bioresources of the unique subtropical broad-leaved forests and those of the Himalayan sub-alpine vegetation. Under the umbrella of the National Knowledge Innovation Program outlined by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and recently approved by the central government, the Institute is now a major part of the 'Research Base for Bio-resources and Biodiversity Conservation Base in Southwest China', which is one of the eight national knowledge innovation bases. The Institute will play a greater role in the regional and global botanical study and social-economic development in mountain areas. The Kunming Institute of Botany is located in Heilongtan, a scenic spot in the northern suburb of Kunming, capital of Southwest China's Yunnan Province. In fact, Kunming itself is named "vernal city". The Institute was the successor of the Yunnan Provincial Institute of Agricultural and Forestry Botany founded in 1938 by the Fan Memorial Institute of Biology in Peiping ( Beijing ) in conjunction with the Yunnan Provincial Department of Education and Yunnan University. Soon after the founding of the Academia Sinica (the Chinese Academy of Sciences, CAS) in 1950, it was taken over by the Academy and re-organized as the Kunming Station of Institute of Botany, Academia Sinica. It soon became the Kunming Branch of the Institute of Botany, Academia Sinica. The Institute changed to its present name in 1958, although it was named Yunnan Provincial Institute of Botany during the Cultural Revolution. This situation remained until 1978 when the Academy resumed the patron. Eminent Chinese botanists Professors H. H. Hu, W. C. Cheng, F. Z. Wang, T. T. Yu, H. T. Tsai, F. H. Chen and C. Y.
