Overview

Kunming , known as “spring city”, enjoys a temperate moist monsoon climate, with the annual average temperature of 15℃ and without extreme hot summers or chilly winters. The hottest weather falls in July with the temperature ranging from 16.67 ℃ to 23.89 ℃ and the coldest weather falls in January, with the temperature ranging from 1.11℃ to 15℃. The annual average sunshine duration of Kunming is 2,400 hours and the annual average precipitation is 1,000 mm. Rainy season lasts from May to October, when 85% of the annual rainfall concentrates in this period. Tourists need to bring thick clothes as the temperature is likely to drop once it rains. Kunming features large temperature difference during a day. During winter and spring, the temperature difference range from 12 ℃ to 20 ℃ in the daytime. Thus, bringing thick coats is necessary, in case of catching cold.

In spring, it’s warm and dry and there is large temperature difference in the daytime. In summer, there is no intense heat and most of the rainfall concentrates in this season. Autumn boasts cool and dry weather. In winter, there is no severe cold; instead, the sunshine is sufficient.

Best Visiting Time

Kunming is suitable for traveling throughout the year due to its comfortable weather condition. The best time to visit Kunming is from March to October when a large number of ethnic festivals of a variety are held. Besides, various fruits and flowers in full bloom during this period will gladden the heart and please the eyes.

Avoid Peak Traveling Periods

It is strongly suggested that tourists should avoid peak traveling periods in China, when there are numerous Chinese people traveling, bringing inconvenience to tourists. The peak traveling periods include some traditional Chinese Festivals , including New Year’s Day (January 1st to 3rd), Spring Festival ( late January or early February), May Day( May 1st to 3rd) and National Day holidays( October 1st to 7th).
