With particularly excellent geographical and climatic conditions and rich natural food, Zhanjiang has long been an important base for growing pearls. And Liusha Village in Leizhou City has been known as the “first village of Chinese pearls”.

As is well known in the international pearl market, the Southern Pearls (Leilian Pearl produced in China) are better than western pearls, and western pearls are better than Japanese pearls.

Pearls are praised as the “queen of the kingdom of jewelry”. They are not only de luxe ornaments but also a kind of rare medicine. According to the traditional Chinese medicinal theory, pearls can help one keep calm, relieve uneasiness of body and mind and reduce phlegm.

Pearls are also very useful. People can make use of the pearls, the shellfish meat and even the shells in which the pearls grow. In Liusha Village, there are people who collect the shells to make cooling summer sleeping mat. Pearl powder is a kind of important material for making cosmetics. The shells can also be made into works of art. Some people even carve lifelike figure painting on the black butterfly shells.

Tips: According to the local people, those pearls grown into the shells in summer are the best because they are shining, heavier, rounder and bigger.

How to select good pearls: you should consider the color, shine, thickness of the layer of nacre (mother-of-pearl), the shape and the flaw when you choose the pearls.

Where to buy:

Tourists can go to Dongfeng Market in Xiashan District to buy the local marine products or go to the Pearl Culture and Exhibition Center (40, East Jiefang Road, Xiashan District. Telephone: 0759-2382220, 2382219), Yinlang Pearl shops (in Guomao Mansion on Renmin Street at the city center and East Jiefang Road in Xiashan District) and Quanjiafu Pearl Town (located on the first floor, 22, Zhong Renmin Avenue, the Economic Development Zone, Zhanjiang) to buy the rare pearls.
