Ramie, also named Yuanma, has been growing in Zhaotong City for more than one thousand years. In Qin Dynasty and the period of Republic of China, it is one of the staple commodities of specialties transported from Zhaotong to Sichuan and sold there. In 1950s, large gardens of ramie once appeared in the villages along Guan River of Yanjin County and Daguan County.
