Ancient Fishing Harbor

The Shipu Harbor of Xian gshan County was originally called Li Harbor,  and was also called Jiuxi Harbor, due to it's shape which resemble that of a curved moon. The harbor is surrounded by the continent, Dongmen Island, Duimian Mountain Island, Nantian Island and Nantang Island and forms a closed type of bay with many harbor entrances. It's unique shape makes it so "the outer sea can't be seen from the inner harbor". Though it is closed in the harbor, the waterways of the five entrances permit a free flow at all times. The five water gates include Tongwa Gate, Dong Gate, Xiaowan Gate, Lin Gate and San Gate. The graceful poem that "families who live among moist smoke will hear the sound of waves ten thousand miles away from the pillow" depicts the unique geographical features of the Shipu fishing harbor. Therefore, for the sake of the fishing harbor, in September of 1933, more than 30 movie artists from Shanghai , such as Chu Caisheng, Nie Er, Wang Renmei, and Sang Hu, took a special trip to Shipu and shot the outer door scene of the movie "Song of the Fishermen". The ceremony of China Fishing Festival is held here and thousands of fishing boats setting out to the sea from the harbor constitutes a spectacular scene. The Shipu Harbor is now one of the four fishing harbors in our country, a window to get in contact with Taiwan and the second-class opening port of the country.

You may take a Kuaike heading for Shipu at the Ningbo South Coach Station and then take bus route 1 and 2 in the town and get off at the old street.

Recommended time for a visit: Two days. Shipu has long enjoyed a good reputation as "seafood kingdom". In the town there is a seafood street bursting with sidewalk snack booths. Tourists may take seafood while enjoying a sea view.
