Built in the early years of Yonghe period of Eastern Jin Dynasty, Big Buddha Temple has a history of over 1,600 years. Tourists can get to know the glorious history of the temple and its position in Buddhism development from books or guiders dictation. However, the art of its statues and the harmony of the architecture and environment are beyond any letters or words, the spirit of which can be felt only when you are personally on the scene.

The Big Buddha Statue is in a stone cave of the Xianji Rock of Shicheng Hill. Out of the cave stands a magnificent Hall of Sakyamuni, stream gurgling outside the hall and incense wreathing inside, which is the center area of Big Buddha Temple. No matter for any purpose to visit the big Buddha and whether you have the fullest mental preparation, everyone will fill a kind of intangible awe when stepping into the gate. Although the statue is sacred with a kindly look, even staring at every person of this world with a smile, no one can avoid this kind of feeling. The entablement of the statue is 2 m high, height 13.74 m, head 4.8 m high, ears 2.8 m and nose 1.48 m. With a harmony proportion, which fully considering peoples visual angle of appreciation, the big Buddha is called "the first big Buddha in the south of the Yangtze River" by academic circles.

One Thousand Buddha Temple stands about 300 m of the northwest of Big Buddha Temple, close to its gate. It is another statue of stone cave besides the big Buddha. The total number of the figures of Buddha in the cave exceeds one thousand, whence comes the name, which is commonly called One Thousand Buddha Cave. According to statistics, there are totally 1,075 statues of Buddha in the cave, the size of which ranges from several inches to 1 m.
