The reason why East Lake can make deep impression on people's mind mainly lies in the visual impact made by its artificial cliff. So, the most importance for visiting the lake is to appreciate the cliff, which presents different scenes from far, middle and near distances. Visiting the cliff when walking along the path aside the wall at the bank of the ancient canal, you will see the color of the cliff of different shade and caves of different shapes, presenting many levels and keeping changing. The path above the lake provides an approach to visit in the middle-distance, the cliff and caves composed by the cliff offer people the marvel and make them amaze at the perseverance of the ancestors. Of course, the way of watching in the near distance is to visit in the cave by boat. When appreciating East Lake under the cliff, you may feel the insignificance of yourself. The most wonderful things of visiting East Lake by boat are watching Taogong Cave and Xiantao (means celestial peach) Cave from the near distance; it is safe to say that without visiting these two caves, you never come to the East Lake. The entrance of Taogong Cave only admits a small boat to pass, while there is marvelous scene in the cave; when you look up at the small piece of sky at the bottom of the cave, the scene of a frog in the well will take on before your eyes. Watching Xiantao Cave at the bank, you can only see a simple stone-framed gate. However, when contacting the cave in person, you will see the huge celestial peach combined with its inverted image under the direction of the guide.
Besides the wonderful spots such as Taogong Cave and Xiantao Cave etc, there are artificial decorations to the point, including Tingqiu Pavilion, Xiachuan Bridge, Yinlu Pavilion, Guiling Mountain and Qin Bridge etc; remaining in East Lake is like standing in a picture. Besides natural scene composed by hill, stone and lake, the lake also has some historic resorts; some personages, such as Sun Zhongshan, Tao Chengzhang, Xu Xiling and Lu Xun etc, have been in East Lake for a visit or revolutionary planning. After the death of Tao Chengzhang, people in Shaoxing built Tao Organization in the lake in memory of the martyr. In the August of 1916, Sun Zhongshan came to Tao Organization in person to offer sacrifice. After the foundation of the new China, leaders of the party and the government, such as Mao Zedong, have visited East Lake for many times. Guo Moshi composed a poem in the lake: "East Lake as small as an indocalamus basket was artificially excavated. Cliffs rise for thousands of chi (a unit of length) and paths are narrow to pass. Enter the cave in big boat and watch the sky like in a frog in the well. Don't say that the lake is small, because it contains the sky."
