The "prologue to the Orchid Pavilion Collection" composed by Wang Xizhi reaches the peak of poetic perfection in the history, because of which he was praised as "Saint of Calligraphy" respected by later generations. On the Clear and Bright Festival, calligraphers inside and outside come to Jinting and pay respects to Wang Xizhi at his tomb. The grave of the saint of calligraphy is wide, neat and round, stone grave hall around. In the middle of the stone pavilion of sacrifice in front of the grave, there is a stele of "the Youjun Grave of Jin Prince" established during the Hongzhi period of Ming Dynasty. On the steles of the pavilion inscribed a couplet: "a brush pen stands against the sky, the epitaph is kept on people’s mind forever".
In front of the grave, cherry trees presented by Japanese friends flourishes, where stands a high bluestone stele of Prologue to the Orchid Pavilion Collection, which was given by the Tianxi Chamber of Japan. After thousands of years, descendants of Wang Xizhi have developed the 55th generation. Huatang of Jinting Town is the biggest ancient village where descendants of Wang Xizhi live in association. With the population of about 5000, it has two old commercial streets built in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, keeping lots of ancient buildings of the local color of Shengzhou. Among them, the Great Wang’s Ancestral Temple (Ancestral Temple of Wang Xizhi) built in the Ming Dynasty, consisting of gate tower (Cijie archway), pool, stone bridge, Hall of Dutiful Son and back hall, has been remedied and ranked among the historical and cultural sites under provincial protection. Huatang has a long history, simple folkway and customs of long standing.
Wang Xizhi loved calligraphy from a child; he studied successively under Mrs. Wei, Cai Yong and Zhong Yao. However, he was free from ancients, widely absorbing the merits from various calligraphers and formed the unique style of clear and round stroke and regular structure, achieving high accomplishments in calligraphy skill. The sage of calligraphy was good at regular, cursive and running hands. His cursive hand is lively and vigorous, elegant and beautiful and absolutely magic. His "Prologue to the Orchid Pavilion Collection" has enjoyed high reputation for thousands of years, praised as "the first running hand of the world". The Emperor Tai Zong of the Tang Dynasty tried his best to own it, which was buried in the Zhao Imperial Mausoleum with him after his death. And now, the later generations can only see the copies. Wang Xizhi was born in Langwangya of Shandong and then moved to Shaoxing. He took the position of "Neishi (an official title)" in Huiji, called as Wang Youjun. Later, because of his conflict with General Piaoji, he pled illness, resigned his position, buried himself in Jinting and practiced calligraphy, meeting friends by articles and making with some litterateurs, such as Xu Xuandu, Zhi Xun and Xie An etc. They left many stories and historical quotations winning universal praise. For example, Wang Ziyou visited Dai Kui on the snowing night, who "came in high sprits and return after enjoying himself", which has become a much-told story for thousands of years.
