Zhoushan Archipelago, or Zhoushan Islands, is a large group of islands located at the mouth of Hangzhou Bay in the East China Sea where the latter meets the Yellow Sea. Put slightly differently, the Zhoushan island complex lies just beyond the mouth of the Yangtze River, where the Yangtze empties into the Pacific Ocean (or the East China Sea, as it is called locally). Known as "Chushan" by foreign powers during the Colonial Era in China (viz., the Unequal Treaties (1842-1933) period, when trade and territorial concessions were forced upon the then Qing (CE 1644-1911) Dynasty government), the city that bears the same name as the archipelago - and the name of the archipelago's main island - is the only prefecture-level political entity in China that consists solely of islands.
Neolithic Age humans belonging to the Hemudu Culture (BCE 5000-4500) inhabited the islands of the Zhoushan Archipelago. Since these islands were relatively close to the mainland,... [ View Details ]

I give it one star only because it is required to mark at least one, otherwise I would have give it a minus 5. If you ignore all the reviews and go anyway, you would come back very angry with yourself for not listening to your own reasoning. So, spend your money somewhere else.

Hello, Zhoushan is a fisherisland with several thousands of fisherboats. The muddy river delta brings tons of mud into the area hence swimming and fishing is a complete NO GO. There are several great hotels at low cost (Sheraton offers 64EUR/night all in, huge rooms and great facilities) but there is nothing to visit here I can recommend. The onlz thing you can do here is looking at rusty fisherboats or work here in the marine industry (what I actually do) Cheers FoxBravo

Don't go! The pictures of the ocean on every tourist site are fake. The water is chocolate brown not blue! The food is bad! The crab is starving they have no meat left inside. The people all work together to rob your money! The hotel was nice but they owned restaurant and we went! Mistake 280RMB for bad food! The cheated us on the oysters by replacing the meat inside with clam meat! I come from Vancouver island and I know seafood very well! The beaches all cost about 70RMB to visit and if you buy a three day VIP pass it only lets you visit one beach the others are free or with a different company that charges you again! The food is SO bad the people are so bad. They will not help you at all. The sandcastles are fake! The water is dirty nothing lives there! The restaurants have no prices and the scales they weigh the fish with are not working right! If you ask to see them weigh the fish they will get mad! Just take my word for it don't go there!
