The Duke of Cambridge made his first official visit to China. It was the first senior British royal visit to China since 1986 when the Queen and Prince Philip toured to the country. He visited Beijing, Shanghai and China’s only elephant sanctuary in Yunnan Province.
He kicked off his tour with meeting President Xi Jinping on March 2, and visited the icon of Beijing — the Forbidden City. On his second day in China, he officially opened the Great Festival of Creativity in Shanghai. In the afternoon, he attended the China’s premiere of Paddington in Shanghai Film Museum.
On 4 March, this keen environmentalist visited Yunnan Province, where about 250 wild elephants live, and learnt about China’s conservation efforts, before ending his tour by giving a speech at a regional wildlife event.
The first place he visited in Yunnan was Mengman village of Xishaungbanna, where Dai ethnic minority people have primitive living way. He had a taste of Zongzi in a villager’s house, took some tea leaves sent by villagers and gave villagers British tea sets. In the afternoon, he came to Asian Elephant Breed and Research Center of Wild Elephant Valley in Jinghong City. He fed a wild elephant named Ranran. There are about 300 wild elephants in Yunnan Province.
