Guilin Travel in Four Seasons

Guilin is famous all over the world for its natural scenery, highlighted by green hills, clear water, fantastic caves and spectacular rocks, and some visitors considered that the best times to visit Guilin are from April to October. As a matter of fact, Guilin presents visitors with its distinctive kinds of beauty in different seasons; therefore, you’re advised to visit the city throughout the year for sightseeing.

Spring in Guilin

Spring is the best time for an outing in Guilin, during which the verdant mountains and clear water are picturesque, and you’re highly recommended to take a cruise along the Li River, see the full blooming flowers at Mao’er Mountain and visit Gongcheng for appreciating the peach flowers.

Cruise on the Li River

Originated from the Cat Mountain, the Li River runs across Lingchun, Guilin and Yangshuo before emptying into Pingle, and it’s called A-Hundred-Li Gallery by the locals.

The Li River is the mother river of Guilin, whose scenery takes on various looks as weather conditions changes in spring, and you can take a cruise (from Yangdi to Yangshuo) to appreciate green peaks and their inverted reflections in water on a sunny day. On the rainy days, mists overcast the peaks and stretch far into the distance along the river, and the peaks are partly hidden and partly visible with the clouds drifting around them, which is just like a watercolor painting.

Appreciating Azaleas on the Cat Mountain

As the source of the Li River, the Xun River and the Zi River, the Cat Mountain is the highest mountain of South China with its peak of 2,141 meters (7,024 feet) above the sea level, which looks like a huge cat in appearance, hence its name.

The Cat Mountain Nature Reserve is awarded "the Forest Kingdom of South China", where over 300 species of animals and 2,000 kinds of plants grow. In spring, the cat mountain becomes an ocean of flowers, highlighted by more than 30 species of azaleas, which are scattered on the mountain paths and blanketing the mountain slopes, making it a hot spot for photographers.
Location: in the intersection of Xing'an County, Ziyuan County and Longsheng County, Guilin

Transport: take a bus No. 1, 99 or 100 to Qunzhong Road from Guilin city center, and transfer a coach to the Cat Mountain.

Admiring Peach Blossoms at Gongcheng

With 108 kilometers (67 miles) southeast of Guilin, Gongcheng is not only famous for its cultural relics such as the Confucian Temple, the Temple of the King Zhou, the Temple of Guan Yu and Hunan Guild Hall, but also it’s known for its annually Peach Blossom Festival.

Daling Mountain (in Gongcheng) Peach Garden stretches for 2.8 kilometers (1.7 miles), which is dotted with blooming peach blossoms in spring. Some peach blossoms are white, some are pink, and some are fiery-red, all of which vie with one another for glamour in spring, making Gongcheng a wonderful place for experiencing the beauty of nature.

Summer in Guilin

Guilin is very rich in rivers, some of which have many shoals and rapids, and some are very wide and calm. Summer is an ideal time to experience an exciting rafting in Guilin, and you’re highly recommended to go rafting on the Dragon Neck River (the Longjing River) and the Yulong River. In addition, the waterfalls in Gudong are also worthy of visiting.

Rafting on the Dragon Neck River

The Dragon Neck River features many shoals and rapids, and it’s an excellent destination for adventure travelers, along which the verdant tree-covered peaks set off their reflections in the crystal-clear water. The Dragon Neck River has 108 turns, and it takes about three hours for visitors to go rafting on the 4 -kilometer (2.5 miles) long stretch (starting from Yanshuitang) of the Dragon Neck River.

Rafting on the Yulong River

As the largest tributary of the Li River, the 40 -kilometers (25 -mile) long Yulong River originates from Baizhan Peak of Lingui County and runs through over 20 villages of Yangshuo, which meets the Jinbao River at Gongnong Bridge before emptying into the Tianjia River.

Rafting on the Yulong River not only offers visitors the fine views of mountains and water, but also it presents you with something that you’ve never seen in big cities, such as the ancient water villages, old waterwheels and archaic bridges, all of which will absolutely enables your rafting to be unforgettable.

Autumn in Guilin

Autumn is the best season in Guilin, when the weather is neither too hot nor too cold. It’s a good ideal to explore the beauty of Longji Terraced Field, appreciate the ocean of gingkoes in Haiyang and admire the red maple leaves in Gudong during autumn, through which you will find the true colors of autumn in Guilin.

Longji Terraced Fields

Longji Terraced Fields are represented by Jinkeng Red Yao terraced fields, the Ping'an Zhuang terraced fields and ancient Longji Zhuang terraced fields, which fully combine the natural scenery and ethnic minority heritages as one.

Longjie Terraced Fields are extremely beautiful in autumn owing to their golden colors and magnificent momentum, which look like a huge dragon sleeping on the mountains, hence its name. The highlighted scenic spots of Longji Terraced Fields are the Seven Stars Surrounding the Moon, Nine Dragons and Five Tigers and the Golden Buddha Peak, of which the Golden Buddha Peak is an excellent place for photography.

Admiring Red Maple Leaves at Gudong

Gudong Ecological Scenic Area combines cascading waterfalls, green ponds and red maple trees perfectly as one, where the air is very fresh as well. Guangdong has the largest red maple tree cluster in South China, which are mainly distributed on the slopes of mountains. As autumn draws near, the maple tree leaves turn red, which is very spectacular owing to the red leaves blanketing the mountainous paths. It’s real joy for visitors to appreciate the red leaves falling off trees by standing on the 200 -meter (219 -yard) long suspended bridge.

Appreciating Gingkoes at Haiyang

Haiyang is home to over one million of gingkoes, half of which are over 100 years old, and the oldest one is over 500 years old. In autumn, the gingko leaves turn yellow from green, which is extremely poetic as the wind blows the falling leaves, and then you’ll feel you’ve found the true color of autumn. Haiyang attracts hundreds of visitors each autumn owing to its yellow gingko trees, and most of them come to take their wedding photos.

Winter in Guilin

The winter of Guilin is rather cold, however, there is something wonderful for you to explore at this time of the year. You’re highly advised to bath in hot springs in Longshen and Ziyuan, and some karst caves such as the Seven Star Cave and the Reed Flute Cave are also worthy of visiting during winter.

Longshen Hot Spring Scenic Area

Longsheng Hot Spring Scenic Area is dotted with verdant-tree covered peaks, where the 16 springs of various sizes gush out from rock stratum 1,200 meters (3,937 feet) below ground, and the temperature remains about 58℃ at the mouths of springs. The springs are rich in trace elements (such as lithium, strontium, iron, zinc and copper) that are beneficial to human bodies, and it’s real enjoyment for visitors to take a bath in hot springs in cold winter in Guilin.

Daxia Hot Springs at Ziyuan County

Daxia Hot Spring Scenic Area is a comprehensive scenic area with recreation, sightseeing, conference, ecological tourism combined as one, where the hot springs remain at the temperature of 47.5℃, and they’re favorable to ameliorate the blood circulation of human bodies and can cure some diseases such as arthritis, diabetes mellitus and chronic digestive tract disease.

Seven Star Cave

Hidden in the belly of Putuo Hill in the Seven Star Park, the Seven Star Cave is celebrated for its dazzling array of stalagmites and stalactites, where is extremely fantastic with the colorful lights shining upon various kinds of rocks. The highlighted attractions in the cave include the Lion Playing with Balls, the Immortal Sunning His Net, the Southern Heavenly Gate and the Magpie Bridge over Milky Way.
