Last Saturday, I went to Yangshuo which is in the southeast of Guilin 65 kilometers always from the city center. It is an ancient town with an over 1000-years history, built in the Jin Dynasty (265 A.D-420 A.D).
In the early morning, about 7: 00a.m, I arrived the Guilin train station where you can find many buses to Yangshuo. Before I got on the bus, I bargain with the conductor, and paid 7 RMB to Yuangshuo at last. As I got off the bus in Yangshuo, about four or five women instantly surrounded me. Three were touting guesthouses, the fourth was offering bikes to rent and the fifth, a young woman in an Orlando Magic baseball cap said nothing, just looking at me and holding some books in her hand. I followed the fourth women to rent a bike. I chose one that seemed to can be as functional as I would get for 5RMB and hired a woman as a guild for 10 RMB. Then, we went to the first scenery ---Butterfly Spring.
Butterfly Spring Park is located in the best traveling place of Moon Hill Scenic Area, occupying an area of 36,000 square meters (8.9 acres). It is named after a butterfly-like stalactite found in a grotto of this beautiful park. As a locale, which can be both a unique landscape and a rural setting as well, it becomes a typical representative of ecotourism sites in Yangshuo. At the entrance of the Butterfly Spring Park is a huge Monarch Butterfly model mounted on a cliff. The model is over 280 square meters (0.07 acres) in the area. It looks so vivid that people may think the butterfly is waving its wings to welcome visitors. He Jingzhi, a famous poet in China, visited here and was so astonished by the huge butterfly model that he wrote an inscription which is titled the No.1 Butterfly under the Heaven to praise it. In the park's 400-meter-long Butterfly Grotto, spring water oozes from the sandy layer in the rock every day and forms a pool day by day. Such is about the Butterfly Spring.
After seeing butterfly spring, we went to the big Banyan tree. It is said that the banyan was planted in the Jin Dynasty. It is famous for its age and towering beauty. The banyan tree is now 17 meters high, 7.1 meters around the trunk, and covers an area of 1000 square meters. Looking closely, we see its beautifully twisted roots and gnarled branches. Its crown is round with an exuberant growth of branches and leaves. There is a huge branch stretching out straight starting just 1 meter above the ground. Enduring wind and rain for thousands of years, it is surprising that this branch has not been harmed. The Tall Banyan is on the west bank of the Jinbao River. There is an ancient ferry under the tree, named "Rongyin Gudu". Across the river, there is a must see with various rocks, fascinating mountains and wonderful caves. The scene of the old famous movie "Liusanjie" was filmed here at the Big Banyan Tree.
At lunch time, I went to a local restaurant. I ordered two dishes which are really delicious and its service was quickly, but the price is a little expensive. After lunch I went to Moon Hill. With an of, Moon hill is 380 meters in elevation height, 230 meters in relative height and 410 meters in length. Over 800 marble stairs leading to the cave were completed in 1981, giving convenience to those who want to get a close view of the cave. The cave is about 50 meters in height and width, shaping like a semicircular archway. In sunny day, you can see the blue sky and white clouds through the cave and in cloudy and rainy day; the "moon" is deep in mist. Viewed from different places, the moon takes on different shapes, sometimes it is full moon, sometimes half-moon and sometimes crescent, forming a marvelous spectacle in Yangshuo.
At last, I went back to return the bike and went to the famous street – the West Street. West Street is the oldest street at the center of Yangshuo County with a history of more than 1,400 years. West Street is 517 meters (1,696 feet) long and 8 meters (26 feet) wide, meandering in an 'S' along its length. Being completely paved with marble, it is a typical example of a southern China street. It is greatly admired by foreigners for its simple style and courtyard-like setting. There is a saying about West Street that 'half is village while the other half is stores'. Along the West Street are many craftwork shops, paintings and calligraphy stores, hotels, cafes, bars and Chinese Kungfu academies.
I went to the Yangshuo bus station at about 6:00p.m...After about one and a half hour, I arrived in Guilin and headed to my school. It was a wonderful day. Just at that time, I finally understood that people said "Guilin's mountains and waters rank first in China and Yangshuo's are the best in Guilin".
