Xixi National Wetland Park

Xixi National Wetland Park is the first and the only national wetland park in China. It is the combination of urban wetland, farming wetland and culture wetland. Located in the west outskirts of Hangzhou, 5-kilometre-away from West Lake and in the stretch of Tianmu road, Xixi National Wetland Park is the urban secondary wetland which is rarely seen.

It is well known the same as West Lake and Xiling in Hangzhou. The water of the scenic spot is what attracts us the most. 70% of the park consists of river ports, ponds, lakes and wetlands. It is so-called “travelling the graceful stream with the curled smoke from the kitchen chimneys on the two sides”.

What to See

There are some fascinating sights with obvious appeal. Three causeways and ten sights in Xixi Wetland Park are the must-see for the travelers.

Three Causeways

Fu Causeway

“Fu” suggests happiness in China. Fu Causeway is one of the three causeways in which the other two causeways are Lu Causeway and Shou Causeway.

“The river is nature while the bridge is culture”. Fu Causeway’s “Liufu Bridge” connects numerous attractions such as Yuling ancient town, Gao village, Jiaolu grange, Jiaolu nunnery, Qushui nunnery, Hong garden and so on. Xixi is a culture Causeway which contains the meaning of Hangzhou is the city that has “the most sense of happiness”.

Lu Causeway

“Lu” means green in China. On both sides of the 1, 700 m causeway, there are fishponds, on the basis of which plants rich varieties of vegetation. It is the ecological causeway of Xixi. Travelers will see several display areas of aquatic plant.

Shou Causeway

“Shou” refers to longevity in China. Shou Causeway is the longest among the three causeways. It has a length of about 3, 600 m. On the causeway, travelers will see a ecological landscape chain. It links some of the Ten Sights: Dragon Boat Pageant, Persimmon and Hong’s Villa.

The ten sights make up the charming scenery of Xixi Wetland Park. It is a lovely place for an easy weekend getaway.

Dasheng Nunnery

Dasheng Nunnery was built in Song dynasty and experienced a process of prosperity and decline. It was reconstructed in 2005 and now is the essential sight spot which can only be arrived by boat in Xixi wetland.

Water Mirroring Red Persimmons

It is also called the tree of longevity or the fruit of seven wonders. The predecessors praised: “The persimmon has seven wonders: longevity, shady and cool, none-nest, none-wood-borer, ornamental autumn leaves, delicious fruits and writable fallen leaves.” When the persimmons are ripe and the leaves are fallen, the fruits seem like lanterns hanging on the tree. Travelers can see the red reflections of persimmons mirroring in the river.

Dragon Boat Pageant

When it is Dragon Boat Festival on May 5th of the lunar year, the Dragon Boat Pageant will be hosted in Xixi. At that time, travelers can appreciate traditional Chinese opera, Chinese kung fu and dragon-lion dance. It shows the tenacity of the villagers and the desire of living a happy life.

Egret Trace with the Lotus

It is a main place in Xixi Wetland Park for bird-watching. Wetland is the paradise for the wetland creature. It gives travelers a feeling of outside world place without human impact.

Hong's Villa

Hong’s family was a group of celebrities during Song, Ming and Qing Dynasty. The big family lived in this place for a hundred years. In that period of time, the family emerged a group of famous people. The villa was rebuilt by Hong Zhong who inherited the career of his ancestors.

Moonlight mirroring within the Reeds

Autumn is the best season for travelers to visit this sight. It is a place which is rich in yellow orange, red persimmons, purple water chestnut and tasty tea. In autumn, when it breezes, the catkin of the reeds will fluttered like the snow in the sky.

In the evening, when rowing a boat, the reflection of the bright moon can be seen in the lake.

Rainy Fishing Village

In rainy season, the graceful scenery “travelling the graceful stream with the curled smoke from the kitchen chimneys on the two sides” will appear in this scenic spot. There are displays of making wine, traditional marriage, developing silkworm, fishing and farm. Travelers can enjoy local delicacies there.

Xixi Plum Villa

It is a place for travelers to enjoy the beauty of plum flowers. It makes up the leisure area with the Plum and Bamboo Villa, Xixi cottage and Xixi Waterside Pavilion. The area is surrounded by plum trees.

Gao's Villa

It is the villa residence of Gao Shiqi from Qing Dynasty. The famous man used to master penmanship, poetry, do research and appreciate antique. The villa consists of Gao’s residence, bamboo window, bookstore, Tongyin Hall and Jiaoyuan poetry house, which shows the historical scene that Kangxi Emperor visited Gao’s Villa.

Appreciate Music in Hezhu

It is a place for leisure and shopping. Travelers can appreciate the local handicraft and buy local specialties.

What to Do


To go hiking in the Xixi Wetland Park, travelers will be surrounded by green plants and fresh air. It is a relaxation of the whole body and a getaway from the crowd and noisy city and a enjoyment of history, culture and nature.

Sculling boat

Walking around Xixi is not enough? Now, Sculling boat is recommended to the travelers. Nothing can be more wonderful than taking a small boat with your family, your lover and your friends to enjoy the scenery aside. It is a place of quiet surroundings, bird life and spring growth if traveling in springtime.


Hangzhou is not only famous for the scenery but the West Lake Dragon Well Tea. What you taste is the sweet and the culture as well. Also, Hangzhou silk is very famous, especially the silk umbrella and the silk clothes.

Best seasons (spring, summer and autumn): 8:30 to 17:30 from April 1st to October 31st (Tickets are not available after 16:30.)
