Xuebaoding Scenic Area

The Xuebaoding Scenic Area is a great destination in China for tourists who are willing to go on a mountaineering adventure to be close to the beauty of nature. Filled with glaciers and lakes that span 160 square kilometers, the area is a natural paradise that is also well-developed and preserved, thanks to the initiative of the Tibetan people. The area also plays an important geographic role for the country as it is also the watershed of the Minjiang River and the Peijiang River.

Xuebaoding Peak

The Xuebaoding Scenic Area moves upwards towards what is called the Xuebaoding Peak a.k.a. the Snowy Treasure Peak, where there are three mountains that reach up to 5000 meters in altitude. The peak is one of the mountains that make up the southern territory of Songpan county along with the Xueshanliang Mountain and the Huanglong Mountain. The peak, which resembles a grand pyramid and looms as high as 5588 square meters, is certainly a must-see for travelers, especially since the peaks, particularly the south, west, and northern cliffs, are so high that they are filled with snow throughout the whole year, even in the summer.

In Tibetan language, the word ‘Xuebaoding’ refers to the summer and the winter seasons. This seems like a fitting name for a place that is best visited during the summer and the winter. Spring, however, is also an interesting time to visit the area because of the snow crash. This occurs when the snow at the peak begins to melt and crashes down, causing a loud noise that reverberates through the area and even shakes the whole mountain.

The way towards the Xuebaoding Peak is marked with several unique rocks, ponds, and ravines. In 1986, a group of Sino-Japanese mountaineers became the first to reach the top of the Xuebaoding. The Tibetan people, however, regularly go to the area near the peak for their pilgrimage.

Towards the foot of the mountain, the area is filled with flowers, bushes, grasses, and trees, mostly pine. Some Chinese herbs can also be found there. Because of the plants that thrive there, it’s a rich habitat for sheep, deer, and forest musk deer, among other wildlife.

Xueshanliang Mountain

The Xueshanliang Mountain makes up the middle portion of the Xuebaoding Scenic Area. Due to its location, it is also the fountainhead of the Peijiang River. The mountain rises up to 4000 meters and is one of the mountains looming over the Huanglong Valley. The mountain itself is formed by glaciers and Karst landform as well as some cliffs and caves; thus, it is also a good place for those who have geological interest.

The mountain is also significant to the Tibetan people. In fact, the ridge of the mountain is adorned with prayer flags in five colors, namely blue for the sky, green for the river, red for the fire, yellow for the earth, and white for the clouds. The Tibetan people use the flags to send their prayers to the gods of nature.

As part of the Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area, the Xieshanliang Mountain is one of the best-preserved natural scenic spots in the country, and is therefore worth a visit.
If you have insufficient time, the main spots to watch for are the Taojin Valley, the Guandao Stone, and the Zhangjia Valley.

Huanglong Valley

The Huanglong Valley is a beautiful, peaceful natural scenic area discovered by the Tibetan people a long time ago. This is also a significant place for them.  While the Xuebaoding Peak is often referred to as the Pilgrimage Mountain, the Huanglong Valley is considered as the Saint Paradise among them. Since most of them are devotees of Buddha, they consider pilgrimage as highly important.

The Sprinkling Waterfall

Also known as the ‘shouting spring’, the Sprinkling Water is another must-see for visitors in the Xuebaoding vicinity. The waterfall is quite unique as it only flows when people shouts loudly under the cliff. The louder the people shout, the more water flows out. The water flows only briefly though, as it also stops just as the person stops shouting.

Due to this unique phenomenon, the Tibetan people believe that when pilgrims shouts chants there, Buddha is moved and thus sprinkles saint water over them. Scientific experts, however, explained that the change in air pressure when someone shouts is what causes the water to flow out.

The Sprinkling Waterfall is not the only waterfall in the area. There are also several other huge waterfalls, which are also a great sight in winter, when they all become frozen in just one day. The water form different shapes when they get frozen, but they are all in the same ice blue color that lights beautifully when hit by the sun.
