Last updated by vincentg1991 at 2016/4/5; Destinations: Beijing

Beijing is the capital city and is the politics, culture, transportation and international communication center of China. it covers an area of 16.8 thousand square meters. Beijing is a city combining old and new elements. Beijing is one of the four great ancient capitals in China. There are 6 world heritages belong to it and it is the city which owns the most cultural heritage projects.

Having a 3 thousand years history of establishing the city and over 860 years history of establishing the capital, the famous historic and cultural city takes possession of a large number of historical monuments and the humanities landscapes. While the city is full of high-rise buildings, visitors can also have an impressive experience in the historic site such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and the Temple of heaven or the modern culture of the Bird’s Nest and the Water Cube where held the 2008 Olympic Games.

Among all the ways of traveling in Beijing, hiking is a novel way to feel the historic city by your feet. I spent 5 days to have an fantastic walking on the Beijing section of the Great Wall to experience the long history of Beijing.

Day by Day Hiking Route

Day 1 Beijing Arrival

The first day I arrived in the Beijing Capital International Airport. The airport enjoys the reputation of the First Nation Gate of China. It is the most important and the largest scale international airport having the most advanced equipment and the busiest transportation. It has 168 international and domestic routes to 70 cities in China as well as 36 countries and regions abroad.

In order to prepare for the hiking and keep the best body condition, I decided to find my hotel and have a rest after the long way flying in the first day. There is a saying, the one who didn’t go to the Great Wall is not a real man. So days following I would have a climbing on the Great Wall.

Day 2 Hike from Gubeikou to Jinshanling

The second day I did not begin my hiking from the Great Wall straightly. In the morning, I had had my breakfast on the straight. It is necessary to mention that the local breakfast booths in Beijing are a big highlight. The vender pushing a cart or bear a burden to sell the local special breakfast like the wonton, fried cake, Japonica rice porridge, fried bread stick and Chinese style baked roll.

Every kind of breakfast has the taste of the culture of Beijing. After having my first bite of Beijing, I started my hiking from the modern Beijing. In 2008, Beijing had the opportunity and honor to hold the 29th Olympic Games. The design of the Bird’s Nest and the Water Cube gave a big surprise to the people and impressed all over the world. It took me about 30 minutes to walk outside the Bird's Nest and Water Cube

After lunch, I took a drive spending 2 and a half hour to get to the Xizhazi Village. The village is located on the bottom of the Jiankou Section of the Great Wall. The Jiankou section is rich in the variation of the mountain lie. The perilous peak and the cliff make the Great Wall more dangerous than you can see. The Jiankou Section of the Great Wall wriggles in the shape of “W” and it is like a fully-bent bow, so it got the name Jiankou (means the fully-bent bow).

Hiking towards the east, I got the Great Wall at Mutianyu Section. Different from the Jiankou section, Mutianyu section boosts its charming landscape. It is the longest Great Wall in China and is one of the 16 Scenic Spots in Beijing. The whole day hiking made me tired and I chose to take the cable car down the mountain.
Tips: Visitors should take care of the loose rocks and bricks when hiking in the Jiankou section. To plan the hiking, we will not get back to the Beijing city, so to book a guesthouse in the Gubeikou Village is necessary.

Day 3 Hike from Gubeikou to Jinshanling

The destination of the 3rd day was the Jinshanling Section of the Great Wall. I had my breakfast in the guesthouse. I started my hiking from the bottom of the Gubeikou Section of the Great Wall. Gubeikou section is the Great Wall system which is preserved the most intact. It is consisted of Qi Great Wall and Ming Great Wall. It was always the battle field where the states fight for. It is suitable for taking photograghs.

After 2 hours’ hiking, I got the Jinshanling Section of the Great Wall. It is the essential section of the Great Wall. There is a saying says that the Jinshan is the most charming in the Great Wall. The barrier wall, text brick, Dangma Stone are the three wonders of the Jinshanling section. It enjoys the fame of the photographer's paradise.

Day4 Hike from Jinshanling to Simatai West

The 4th day is the last day of hiking. This day I would hike from Jinshanling to Simatai West. To get up early in the morning, I have the chance to take wonderful photos of the magnificent Jinshanling Section of the Great Wall escaping from the large crowd of the photographers. Go along the Jinshanling section, there were a lot of watch towers appearing in my eyes.

Simatai Great Wall

It was the Simatai Section of the Great Wall. But this section is closed. Instead, I went to the Simatai West. The Simatai section boasts dangerous and adventurous. The Great Wall is the greatest among the architectures and the Simatai Section is the greatest part of the Great Wall.

The Simatai Section of the Great Wall was the last stop of my hiking route. In order to give my meritorious hiking a reward, I decided to have a taste to the most famous Beijing local food, the Beijing Roast Duck, before I left Beijing. The Quanjude Roasted Duck Restaurant is very famous for the Beijing Roast Duck. It is located in the 826 Floor, Jingsong Eight District, Guangming Bridge.
