Zheng Chenggong Memorial Hall

The Zheng Chenggong Memorial Hall was built as the memorial of this national hero. Located on the Gulangyu Island in Fujian’s Xiamen, this attraction is spread over an area of over 13,000 square meters. The mighty and powerful bronze statue of Zheng Chenggong is located in front of this memorial hall and is known to be one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area.

The Main Galleries

Zheng Chenggong Memorial Hall is a must-visit tourist attraction on the Gulangyu Island. Among its various attractions are the seven display galleries depicting Zheng Chenggong’s young age and various other stages of his life. The memorial hall has a large range of exhibits, models, photographs, sculptures, drawings, graphics, documents and artifacts which provide a detailed introduction to the life of this national hero, his patriotism, his role during the Ming dynasty, his efforts to expel the Dutch colonists and regaining the power of Taiwan.

Objects in the Zheng Chenggong Memorial Hall

The Zheng Chenggong Memorial Hall is home to several interesting exhibits such as portrait of Zheng Chenggong, artillery, shirt fragments, armor pieces, a shield, helments, Cheng genealogy and epitaph, arm of coats, dressing gowns, jade belt and his handwritten notes. The hall houses over 400 pieces of interesting historical artifacts related to Zheng Chenggong.

These are cultural relics which are shown along with a huge variety of information such as 10,000 literature volumes. The memorial hall has the largest collection of heritage literature collection on Zheng Chenggong and is also a research base.

The Exhibits

Zheng Chenggong was a well regarded and respected national hero in the Ming and Qing Dynasty. The Zheng Chenggong Memorial Hall has been built in his honor. The memorial hall is home to seven different exhibition halls such as “Inspiring the Generations with his national spirits”, “overcoming hardships and difficulties for developing Taiwan”, “driving the Dutch out for recovering Taiwan”, “Taiwan, the treasure of China”, “Rising in Rebellion and resisting against Qing troops” and “the youth of Zheng Chenggong”.

These exhibits include 800 different items on displays such as models, sculptures, paintings, charts, photos, written materials, documents and historical relics which shine some light on the life of the national hero, Zheng Chenggong, making it easier for the people today to understand and respect his contribution to the nation.

Zheng Chenggong’s History

Zheng Chenggong was known as Koxinga in the west. He was an icon of the Ming Dynasty and is still celebrated today as the national hero. There are various views on who Koxinga really was. Some say that he was a brutal and ruthless pirate ruffian while others say that he was a brave soldier with a lot of loyalty and charisma.

The Role in Regaining Control Over China

Zheng Chenggong was the one who had led the Chinese troops towards victory over the Dutch to regain control over Taiwan in the year 1662. With this victory he also ended the Dutch occupancy of 4 decades. Koxinga later reinforced his nationalist image by resisting continuously to Manchu who were the invaders that later became China’s Qing Dynasty.

The Zheng Chenggong Memorial Hall remembers the famous victory of this hero along with the other important events in his life. A bronze cannon, stone inscriptions and various swords are on display. The jade belt which he wore is the focal point of this exhibition.

To get to the Zheng Chenggong Memorial Hall, take the Gulangyu Ferry Terminal.

Ticket Price:

Admission to the hall is free for general public. Student  groups can visit only by appointment.
