Shanghai Railway Station, also known as the Shanghai New Passenger Station, is a super-grade passenger train station. The total building area of the main station is 45,000 square meters, while the total area of the North-South Plaza is 93,000 square meters. Beneath the Shanghai Railway Station is the Shanghai Railway Station Metro Station which provides access to Metro Lines 1 (South Plaza), 3, and 4 (North Plaza). There is also a Shanghai Bus Terminal nearby.

The Shanghai Railway Station has 13 platforms and 12 tracks for arriving and departing trains. It serves as the departure station for the Beijing-Shanghai Railway, the Shanghai-Nanjing Intercity Railway, the Shanghai-Kunming Railway, and the Shanghai-Suzhou-Nantong Railway. Through connecting lines, it also links with the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway and the Shanghai-Kunming High-Speed Railway, constituting a crucial railway passenger transport hub in Shanghai.

Transit Visa-Free Policy 

Starting January 30, 2016, Shanghai has opened a 144-hour transit visa exemption policy for foreigners at its railway ports. Transit passengers who hold valid international travel documents and a confirmed onward travel ticket (including a confirmed seat) to a third country (region) within 144 hours can enjoy the visa-free transit policy. Activities during the visa-free period are limited to within Shanghai.

How to get to Shanghai Railway Station

You can reach the Shanghai Railway Station metro station by taking Lines 1, 3, or 4 of the Shanghai Metro

The Shanghai Railway Station metro station is located underneath The Shanghai Railway Station's southern plaza and at the ground level of the northern plaza. It serves as the platform for Lines 1, 3, and 4.

The concourse for Line 1 is at the southern plaza, and there is a fast entrance at the southeastern exit of the railway station that leads directly to Line 1's station hall. Stations for Lines 3 and 4 are on the northeast side of the railway station field.

You can also reach the Shanghai Railway Station by taking a Shanghai public bus or taxi. However, due to unpredictable surface traffic conditions, such as during rush hours, holidays, or unexpected traffic accidents which may lead to traffic jams, your journey might be delayed. Therefore, it is recommended to set off in advance and plan your time well.

How to Get to Other Places from Shanghai Railway Station

From Shanghai Train Station, you can take the metro, Shanghai bus routes, or a taxi to get to the airport, other train stations in Shanghai, as well as various areas within the city center.

Shanghai Pudong Airport

At the South Square of Shanghai Train Station (near Bus Route 845), you can take Airport Line 5 directly to Shanghai Pudong International Airport. The ticket price is 20 yuan. The fastest and most sightseeing-friendly method: take Metro Line 1 from Shanghai Train Station to People's Square Station, then switch to Metro Line 2; change to the Maglev train at Longyang Road Station for direct access to Pudong Airport.

Shanghai Hongqiao Airport

Subway: The subway is one of the most convenient transportation methods from Shanghai Train Station to Hongqiao Airport. When you leave Shanghai Station, take metro line 1 at South Square, switch to metro line 2 at People’s Square Station, and get off at Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2. Alternatively, from South Square, take metro line 3 to Zhongshan Park and transfer to line 2, then get off at Shanghai Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2. The entire journey takes about 60 minutes.

Taxi: If you have a lot of luggage or are in a rush, you can choose to take a taxi to Hongqiao Airport. The whole journey also takes about 50 minutes, if there is no traffic congestion.

Bus: You can take the bus on the Hongqiao Airport route, which directly arrives at Hongqiao Airport from Shanghai Train Station. The bus fare is 1-2 yuan, and the whole journey takes about 40-60 minutes, If you have a lot of luggage or are in a rush, you can choose to take a taxi to Hongqiao Airport. The whole journey also takes about 50 minutes, if there is no traffic congestion, if there is no traffic congestion. 

Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station

Subway: After leaving Shanghai Station, take metro line 1 from South Square, then switch to metro line 2 at People's Square Station(人民广场站), and get off at Hongqiao Railway Station. From South Square, take metro line 3 to Zhongshan Park(中山公园), transfer to line 2, and then get off at Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station. The entire journey takes about 60 minutes.

Taxi: You can choose to take a taxi to Hongqiao Railway Station. The whole journey also takes about 50 minutes, if there is no traffic congestion. 

Shanghainan Railway Station

After leaving Shanghai Railway Station, take metro line 1 at the South Square and get off at Shanghainan Railway Station, the whole journey takes about 40 minutes. 

Shanghaixi Railway Station

Take metro line 3 from Shanghai Railway Station, switch to metro line 11 at Caoyang Road Station(曹杨路站), pass three stations, and arrive at Shanghaixi Railway Station, the entire journey takes about 30 minutes.

Shanghai Railway Station has more than 80 ticket windows in total, among which 20 are located in the Joint Ticketing Hall on Beijing East Road in Huangpu District, Shanghai.
