Green Lake Park is a popular park among local people. Since 1985, a large number of seagulls have migrated there from Siberia to spend the winter.

Green Lake Park (also called “Cuihu Lake”), which is originally named “Caihaizi”, is located at the foot of Luofeng Mountain and at the west slope of Wuhua Mountain, facing opposite Yunnan University in the city area of Kunming. Due to the nine springs in the northeast corner of the lake, the lake is also called Jiulong Pond (Nine-Dragon Pond). The Green Lake covers an area of 21.6 hectares, among which the water area takes up 15 hectares. Green Lake Park is a classical landscape garden featuring a unique lake. Green Lake is surrounded by verdant trees, with rippling water and pavilions dotted on the lake. With an elegant and beautiful environment, it is reputed as “Jade of the City”.

Inside the park, the Ruan Embankment across from south to north and the Tang Embankment across from east to west divide the Green Lake into five scenic areas. The architecture of the center of the lake features that of pavilions and towers in the Qing Dynasty. On the southeast part of the park, there is the Shuiyue Corridor and Goldfish Island. On the northeast part, there is the bamboo forest island and Nine-Dragon Pond. On the south part, there is the island and the zigzag bridge. On the west part, there is a pavilion.

At the children’s amusement park to the west of the lake, there are some thrill rides and recreational facilities that are deeply loved by children. At Green Lake Park, there are several flower exhibitions and art exhibitions every year. The large-scale lantern show attracts hundreds of thousands of people each year.

Since 1985, there are large numbers of Larus ridibundus have (Black-headed Gull) fly all the way from Siberia to Kunming to spend winter. During this time, strolling along Green Lake and watching the black-headed gulls is an interesting activity for both locals and tourists. The black-headed gulls look for food in the morning and stay overnight at Dianchi Lake. They will fly back to the north at the end of March.
