FAQs on China Visa-Free Travel
1. Which countries can visit China visa-free?
China has several visa-free policies for travelers. Currently, ordinary passport holders from 50 countries are eligible for China’s 30-day unilateral visa-free entry policy. Travelers from some other countries may enter visa-free under mutual visa-exemption agreements, while citizens of 55 countries, including the United States, may qualify for the 240-hour visa-free transit policy if they are transiting to a third country or region.
2. Can US citizens visit China visa-free?
US citizens are not currently included in China’s 30-day unilateral visa-free entry policy, but they may qualify for the 240-hour visa-free transit policy if they transit through China to a third country or region. US citizens may also use certain regional visa-free policies, such as Hainan’s 30-day visa-free entry, if the route and conditions match.
3. Can UK citizens visit China visa-free?
Yes. Ordinary passport holders from the UK are currently eligible for China’s 30-day unilateral visa-free entry policy for tourism, business, family/friends visits, exchange, or transit.
4. Can Canadian citizens visit China visa-free?
Yes. Ordinary passport holders from Canada are currently eligible for China’s 30-day unilateral visa-free entry policy for tourism, business, family/friends visits, exchange, or transit.
5. Can Australian and New Zealand citizens visit China visa-free?
Yes. Ordinary passport holders from Australia and New Zealand are currently eligible for China’s 30-day unilateral visa-free entry policy for tourism, business, family/friends visits, exchange, or transit.
6. Can Singaporean and Malaysian citizens visit China visa-free?
Singaporean and Malaysian ordinary passport holders can enter China visa-free under mutual visa-exemption arrangements.
7. What is China’s 240-hour visa-free transit policy?
A 240-hour visa-free transit (240-hour TWOV) allows citizens from 55 countries to stay in China for 10 days. You can enter or leave China from a designated port. You can also travel across provinces within the permitted areas in 24 regions to do things like sightseeing, business, or visiting family.
Read the 240-hour visa-free guide for more details.
8. Do I need to apply in advance for a 240-hour visa-free transit?
You do not need to apply for a visa in advance at a Chinese embassy or consulate. Before boarding, inform your airline or transport staff that you plan to use the 240-hour visa-free transit policy. On arrival, apply for temporary entry at the border inspection counter and present your passport, confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region, and any required travel documents.
9. Can I visit multiple cities under the 240-hour policy?
Yes, if all destinations are within the permitted stay areas and both your entry and exit ports are approved under the policy. For example, an eligible traveler may enter through Beijing, visit Xi’an, and depart from Shanghai, provided the full route meets the third-country or region transit requirement.
10. Can I use the 240-hour visa-free transit for a round trip?
No. A simple round trip, such as Hong Kong–Shanghai–Hong Kong, does not qualify for a 240-hour visa-free transit because the onward destination is the same as the departure region. A route such as Hong Kong–Shanghai–Tokyo or Singapore–Beijing–Hong Kong may qualify if all other conditions are met.
11. Can I enter China from one city and leave from another?
You can enter visa-free through one city and exit from another, as long as both are approved entry and exit points according to the policy.
12. Does Hong Kong count as a third destination?
Yes, the entry and exit policies for Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan differ from those of the Chinese Mainland, so they are considered separate regions. This means if you enter the Chinese Mainland from Hong Kong and then leave for a place like Taiwan or Japan, without returning to Hong Kong, it qualifies as a third country/region under the transit visa exemption requirements.
13. Can I travel to Tibet visa-free?
Tibet is not suitable for a standard 240-hour visa-free transit itinerary. If you are eligible for a 30-day visa-free entry policy, Tibet may be included in your China trip, but foreign travelers still need a Tibet Travel Permit and must travel with a licensed guide.
If you book a Tibet tour with us, we can help you apply for the permit. Just provide us with a copy of your passport in advance, and we'll handle the rest.
14. What documents should I prepare for immigration?
Prepare your valid ordinary passport, confirmed flight/cruise/train tickets, hotel reservations, and documents that support your travel purpose. For a 240-hour visa-free transit, you must have a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region within 240 hours. For a 30-day visa-free entry, border officers may also check whether your purpose of visit matches the policy, such as tourism, business, family/friends visit, exchange, or transit.
