How Many Days Do You Need in Chengdu?
For most first-time visitors, two to three full days is a comfortable amount of time in Chengdu. One day works if your priority is the pandas and one or two city highlights. Additional days allow you to visit Leshan or explore farther into Sichuan.

If Chengdu is one stop on a longer China tour, we normally recommend allowing 1–2 full sightseeing days, excluding arrival and departure days. If Sichuan is one of the main focuses of your trip, 6–8 days will give you a much fuller experience.
Which Panda Base Is the Best?
There is no single “best” panda base for every traveler. The right choice depends on how much time you have, whether you prefer convenience or a quieter natural setting, and whether pandas are the main focus of your trip.

Note: Dujiangyan Panda Base has been closed for renovation since April 23, 2026. Its reopening date has not yet been announced. If you would like to join a panda keeper program, we recommend visiting Wolong Panda Base instead. If you simply want to see pandas, Chengdu Panda Base is the better choice.
What Are the Best Trips from Chengdu?
For a one-day trip, the most popular choices are the Leshan Giant Buddha, the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, and Mount Qingcheng, or a panda-focused visit to Wolong. With two or three days, you can explore Mount Emei, Mount Siguniang, or Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong.
If you have six to eight days, consider a broader Sichuan journey combining Chengdu with Jiuzhaigou, Mount Emei, western Sichuan, or Daocheng Yading. The best choice depends on the season, your preferred pace, and your comfort with long drives and higher elevations.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Chengdu?
Chengdu can be visited throughout the year, but spring from March to May and autumn from September to November generally offer the most comfortable weather for city sightseeing.
If your itinerary also includes Jiuzhaigou or western Sichuan, conditions in those higher-altitude areas may be more important than the weather in Chengdu itself.

Try to avoid major Chinese public holidays if your schedule is flexible, especially periods around early May, early October, and the Chinese New Year. Attraction tickets, train tickets, hotels, and local transport are in much higher demand during these dates.
Is Western Sichuan Suitable for Children or Older Travelers?
Yes, but choosing the right itinerary is important. Wolong is generally more manageable for families and older travelers, while Mount Siguniang and Jiuzhaigou still involve moderate to high elevations and require a slower pace. Routes through Daocheng Yading, Litang, and other high-altitude parts of western Sichuan are more physically demanding and carry a greater risk of altitude sickness.
