Two Rivers and Four Lakes

Written by Fabio Updated Apr. 23, 2026

Waterways flow through Guilin like lifelines, bringing vitality to the city’s landscape. The Two Rivers and Four Lakes scenic area—one of the most popular attractions near downtown—connects the Peach Blossom River and Li River with four picturesque lakes: Shanhu, Mulong, Guihu, and Ronghu. These waterways are linked by 19 bridges, each inspired by both traditional Chinese and international architectural styles.

Offering a peaceful escape from the city’s bustle, the Two Rivers and Four Lakes area is a must-visit destination. Spanning about 1,700 meters, it has been thoughtfully developed into a scenic park. The banks are lined with ancient trees, flowering shrubs, pavilions, and lush greenery, creating a serene atmosphere. In addition to its natural beauty, the area also features a number of historically significant structures, adding cultural depth to this relaxing urban retreat.

A night cruise is the most popular way to experience the Two Rivers and Four Lakes. Feel free to contact us if you need help booking your cruise tickets.

Highlights of Two Rivers and Four Lakes

This attraction is a paradise for both active travelers and those who prefer to relax and admire the beauty of nature.

Sun and Moon Pagodas

The Sun and Moon Pagodas represent a perfect fusion of Guilin’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. The Sun Pagoda, cast from 350 tons of pure copper, holds three world records and gleams with golden brilliance. The Moon Pagoda, adorned with glazed tiles, reflects the elegance of traditional Chinese aesthetics with a soft, jade-like charm. Connecting the two is an 18-meter underwater tunnel, symbolizing the harmony of yin and yang—where each step feels like a journey through time.

Ancient South Gate

Ancient South Gate is the oldest surviving city gate in Guilin and one of only two remaining gates from the Song-era (960-1279 AD) Jingjiang Prefecture city wall. Located on the northern shore of Rong Lake, it is a cultural highlight along the Two Rivers and Four Lakes cruise route. Blending over a thousand years of history, Tang–Song architectural heritage, and traces of notable historical figures, it is often regarded as a “living fossil” of Guilin’s urban past.

Elephant Trunk Hill

Elephant Trunk Hill is a highlight of the Two Rivers and Four Lakes cruise. As your boat reaches the confluence of the Li River and the Peach Blossom River, you’ll enjoy a full frontal view of the iconic “elephant drinking water” formation. By day, the mountain reflects beautifully on the water; by night, soft lights create a dreamlike, moonlit scene.
