Huacheng Square: The Largest City Square in Guangzhou

Written by Matteo Updated Apr. 20, 2026

Huacheng Square, also known as Flower City Square, is the largest city square in Guangzhou, covering a total area of 560,000 square meters. Located in the heart of the CBD, the square combines dining, entertainment, and shopping, making it an ideal place for leisure and recreation.

Best Time to Visit Huacheng Square

Huacheng Square is suitable for visiting all year round, but you should avoid summer, when temperatures in Guangzhou are extremely high, and the travel experience is not pleasant.

Also, it is recommended that you avoid China's public holidays, such as Labor Day and National Day. These are peak travel periods, and the attractions are usually very crowded.

Things to do in Huacheng Square

Besides admiring the magnificent architecture, Huacheng Square also offers a wide range of leisure and interactive experiences. Whether you are a photography enthusiast, a food lover, or a family with children, you can find something enjoyable.

Capture the Canton Tower at the South Square

The waterfront platform at the southern end of Huacheng Square is the best spot for a panoramic view of the Canton Tower. You can use the square's pools to capture the tower's reflection, or use the surrounding palm trees as a foreground to take a tropical‑style CBD photo.

Start a Food Journey at Mall of the World

Below the ground level of Huacheng Square is a shopping mall called Huachenghui. You will find all kinds of food, ranging from Michelin‑recommended restaurants to authentic Guangzhou street snacks.

Walk Across Haixin Bridge and Haixinsha Island

Haixin Bridge is the first pedestrian landscape bridge in Guangzhou. Its elegant curved line connects Huacheng Square to the foot of the Canton Tower. Walking across Haixin Bridge, you can feel the gentle breeze from the Pearl River up close and see the scenery on both banks from a brand new angle.

Experience an Immersive Nighttime Light Walk

When night falls, the entire square turns into a huge light show. You can walk from the north end of the square to the south end, feeling fully surrounded by the neon lights of the skyscrapers.

Enjoy Family Time in the City Oasis

Even though it is located in the busy CBD, Huacheng Square still has plenty of green space, artificial lakes, and musical fountains. For families traveling with children, taking the kids to run around the square, watch the koi fish in the lake, or see a scheduled fountain show are all great ways to enjoy some relaxing time during a busy trip.

Highlights Around Huacheng Square

Huacheng Square is known as Guangzhou's city living room. Its charm lies not only in its wide-open green spaces but also in the series of world‑class architectural landmarks that surround it. Together, these landmarks form the magnificent skyline of Guangzhou's modern central axis.

Guangzhou Opera House

The Guangzhou Opera House is world‑famous for its rounded double-pebble design. The entire building looks like two stones that have been smoothed and shaped by the waters of the Pearl River, giving it a fluid beauty and a futuristic feel.

There are also concerts, opera performances, dance performances, and comedy shows held in the Opera.

Guangdong Museum

The museum's design is inspired by a traditional carved treasure box, which is why it is called the Moonlight Treasure Box. This huge black box seems to float magically on one side of the square.

It holds a large collection of valuable cultural relics related to Lingnan culture, natural resources, and artworks. It is the best window for understanding how Guangzhou's history and modern life come together.

The Stunning CBD Skyline

At the southern end of the square, you can see the three tallest buildings in Guangzhou at the same time: the Chow Tai Fook Finance Centre, the Guangzhou International Finance Centre, and the Canton Tower on the opposite bank.

This visual impact of three towering giants standing together reaches its peak when the lights come on at night. It is the best place to feel the pulse of Guangzhou as an international metropolis.

Guangzhou Tower

As the most eye‑catching landmark around Huacheng Square, the 600‑meter‑tall Canton Tower offers a wide variety of experiences.

You can go up the tower and visit the fully transparent suspended walkway on the 107th floor, feeling the thrill of walking above the clouds.

If you like seeking thrills, the Ferris wheel and the sky drop at the top of the tower will give you a unique high‑altitude experience.

Light Show at Huacheng Square

The light shows at Huacheng Square can only be seen during the annual International Light Festival at the end of the year. If you want to see something similar on regular days, you can watch the musical fountain instead.

The water jets at the Huacheng Square musical fountain can reach up to 65 meters high. As they move to the rhythm of the music, the water jets and the colorful light strips on the ground complement each other, creating a stunning visual show.

The fountain show lasts about 15 to 20 minutes. It takes place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 20:00, and on weekends and public holidays at 15:00 and 20:00.

The Guangzhou International Light Festival is held at Huacheng Square at the end of each year. Together with those in France and Sydney, it is ranked as one of the world's three major light festivals. During the festival, Huacheng Square turns into an immersive exhibition of light art and drone performance.
