Choosing between Guilin and Zhangjiajie is not easy. Both are among China’s most impressive natural destinations, but they offer very different travel experiences.
Guilin is best known for its peaceful rivers, limestone karst mountains, countryside villages, rice terraces, and relaxing outdoor activities. Zhangjiajie is famous for its dramatic sandstone pillars, high mountain viewpoints, glass walkways, and the otherworldly scenery often associated with the “Avatar mountains.”
So, should you visit Guilin or Zhangjiajie? Here is the simple answer:
Choose Guilin if you want a softer, more relaxing, easier-to-enjoy landscape experience, especially for couples, families with children, senior travelers, or a first trip to China.

Places such as Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain, Golden Whip Stream, and the Bailong Elevator make the trip feel very different from other destinations in China. Zhangjiajie requires more planning. The scenic areas are large, routes can be confusing, and the experience depends heavily on choosing the right entrance, route, hotel location, and timing. Can You Visit Both Guilin and Zhangjiajie?

However, they are not close enough for a simple day trip. Current train options may take around 7 hours when direct services are available.

Best Time to Visit Guilin and Zhangjiajie
For both destinations, spring and autumn are generally the most comfortable seasons.
Guilin is especially beautiful from spring to autumn. April to October is a good time to visit Guilin.
Zhangjiajie is also popular in spring and autumn, especially when the weather is comfortable, and the mountain visibility is better. March–April, September, and mid-October to mid-November are recommended for milder weather and fewer crowds.
For photography, mist can make both destinations more atmospheric. However, mountain weather in Zhangjiajie can also affect visibility, so it is wise to keep the schedule flexible.
