Guilin or Zhangjiajie: Which Should You Visit on Your China Trip?
Choosing between Guilin and Zhangjiajie is not easy. Both are among China’s most impressive natural destinations, but they offer very different travel experiences.
Guilin is best known for its peaceful rivers, limestone karst mountains, countryside villages, rice terraces, and relaxing outdoor activities. Zhangjiajie is famous for its dramatic sandstone pillars, high mountain viewpoints, glass walkways, and the otherworldly scenery often associated with the “Avatar mountains.”

So, should you visit Guilin or Zhangjiajie? Here is the simple answer:
Choose Guilin if you want a softer, more relaxing, easier-to-enjoy landscape experience, especially for couples, families with children, senior travelers, or a first trip to China.
Choose Zhangjiajie if you want more dramatic scenery, high viewpoints, adventurous walks, and a visually striking mountain destination.
If your schedule allows, you can visit both — but for most first-time visitors, the better choice depends on your travel pace, physical comfort, and overall China itinerary.

Why Visit Guilin?
Guilin is one of the best choices in China for travelers who want beautiful scenery without an exhausting travel pace. The classic image of Guilin is a river winding between green karst peaks, with villages, bamboo rafts, and countryside roads creating a calm and photogenic atmosphere.
The Li River is the highlight of most Guilin trips. The Guilin–Yangshuo section is widely considered the most scenic part, and the cruise from Guilin toward Yangshuo usually takes travelers through the heart of the karst landscape.
Guilin is also a good destination if you want variety without changing hotels too often. In a few days, you can enjoy a Li River cruise, explore Yangshuo’s countryside, take a bamboo raft on the Yulong River, visit local markets or villages, and add a day trip to the Longji Rice Terraces.
Guilin is especially good for:
- Couples who want a romantic and relaxed nature escape.
- Families who prefer gentle sightseeing, short walks, scenic drives, and flexible activities.
- First-time China visitors who want a classic landscape destination that is easy to combine with other major cities.
- Travelers who enjoy photography, countryside life, cycling, cooking classes, light hiking, or river views.
Why Visit Zhangjiajie?
Zhangjiajie feels more dramatic than Guilin. Instead of soft rivers and rounded karst hills, Zhangjiajie offers high cliffs, deep valleys, narrow sandstone pillars, misty forests, and panoramic platforms. It is a destination that often feels bigger, steeper, and more adventurous.
The core scenic area is Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, part of the larger Wulingyuan Scenic Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
For many visitors, the main appeal of Zhangjiajie is visual impact. Places such as Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain, Golden Whip Stream, and the Bailong Elevator make the trip feel very different from other destinations in China. Travelers also often add Tianmen Mountain or Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge, though these are separate scenic areas from the main National Forest Park and require separate planning.
Zhangjiajie is especially good for:
- Active couples who want a more adventurous and memorable trip.
- Families with older children or teenagers who enjoy cable cars, elevators, cliffs, and dramatic views.
- Photographers who want misty mountains, vertical peaks, and cinematic scenery.
- Travelers who have already seen China’s classic cities and want something visually unique.
Which Is Easier to Visit?
Guilin is generally easier to visit for international travelers. It has a more relaxed pace, clearer day-trip structure, and more flexible sightseeing options. It is also easier to adjust the plan if the weather changes.
Zhangjiajie requires more planning. The scenic areas are large, routes can be confusing, and the experience depends heavily on choosing the right entrance, route, hotel location, and timing. A private guide is especially valuable in Zhangjiajie because it helps reduce wasted time and avoid inefficient routing.
This does not mean Zhangjiajie is difficult to visit, but it is less suitable for travelers who want a very casual or low-effort trip.
