Shiqiao Miao Village

Shiqiao Miao Village located about 2.5 km southeast of Danzhai County, Guizhou Province. The Miao Ethnic there still lives a self-sufficient living style. The village is renowned for its traditional paper-making. It is a nice place for travelers, especially for calligraphers to experience and learn the traditional paper-making.

Currently, Shiqiao Miao village has over 300 households with a total population of more than 1300. There are about 60 households are engaged in paper-making. There is no denying that most Miao people there are good at paper-making.

The Paper Making

With a history of more than 1,000 years since Tang Dynasty, the traditional skills of papermaking are still well-preserved. The skill of paper-making in Shiqiao Village is unique, which imparting generation to generation of locals. The skill of paper-making is different from other places in China.

The process of paper-making is simple. And travelers are welcome to visit the whole process of paper-making.

Firstly, the raw materials like barks, tree roots are collected and put into a special receptacle. Secondly, the raw materials were pulped to paper pulp. Thirdly, locals used a screen-shape tool to shake and stir the paper pulp until a layer of paper pulp leaving on the screen-shape tool. Then bake the layers of paper pulp out in the sun until they dried enough. Finally, peel them off.

The papers are mainly used for making notebooks, colorful lanterns, greeting cards and calligraphy papers. The calligraphy papers made by locals there is excellent in quality and exquisite in workmanship. The paper has been well sold in Australia, southeast Asia.

The skill of paper-making in Shiqiao Village is unique, which imparting generation to generation of locals.

Travelers can easily find locals live a simple and original life when they entering the village. There is a cluster of wooden houses lying on the bottom of mountains and rivers. These traditional houses are surrounded by green trees.

Although the local cottages are using huge rocks and wood as foundations, the cottages can withstand strong wind and rain.

Nearby Attractions

There are some idyllic villages like Zhouxi Miao Village and Matang Village around there. Zhouxi Miao Village is a nice place to enjoy a primitive life while Matnag Village is a Gejia Ethnic village that famous for its artistic paper art.
