But we cannot forget that Macao has a long history. Rua da Felicidade is one of them. It is a historic street in the southwest of Macao Peninsula. The name comes from Portuguese, which means blissful street.

History

Rua da Felicidade was built in the middle age of the Qing dynasty by the Macao governor-general. Then, two rich merchants bought it. With their management, it rapidly developed into an entertainment street. Rua da Felicidade was divided into two parts. One is a cluster of brothels and teahouses while another part is a perfect place for taking drugs and drinking. So it was also called “the PARADISE for men”.

Once you come here, you’ll find that the street is preserved so well by the government that as if you have come back to the period hundreds of years ago. It’s a kind of magical time traveling.

Development and Current Situation

The bustling entertainment street had stopped. It’s special business since World War Two. After that, the government began to ban drugs and whoring. In recent years, it has been reformed. So the Rua da Felicidade you see today is one of the tidiest streets. In spite of the historic architecture, people who visit Macao can’t miss the appetizing local snacks here.

Shrimp eggs Noodles

Another Specialty is Shrimp eggs Noodles in the noodles House of Xiang Ji. While you can find nothing about it on the mainland, it is special but easy to make. different from the traditional method, the ingredients are separated, which are mainly comprised of the eggs of shrimp and chopped green onion. Film Location

There are many cheap hotels, of which the most famous one is the Xinhua Hotel built in 1873. Being one of the most beautiful hotels in Macau, it is a well-known film location.

In 2006, only 18-year-old Hong Kong actress Isabella Leong won the best actress in the 27th Portugal International Film Festival with the film Isabella, and Isabella mainly found the view in the Xinhua Hotel.

In addition, the film butterfly starred Josie, daughter of the Macau casino tycoon Stanley Ho, and the film 2046 directed by Karwai Wong was also taken here, the main performers Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Zhang Ziyi were living in Room 2047 and 2046. Many famous celebrities like Faye Wong, Gong Li, Carina Lau, Takuya Kimura, and Zhang Manyu had once lingered there many times.
