Macau International Airport (MFM)

Written by Ruru Zhou Updated Jun. 11, 2021

The Macau International Airport is the main airport that serves Macau. It is located on the eastern side of Taipa Island and is about 5 kilometers or 3 miles from the city center of Macau. Due to its location, the airport is considered a common transfer point for travelers going to China and Taiwan. It is also the hub for Air Macau.

Macau is similar to China and Taiwan in that it has its own immigration policy and is considered separate from China Mainland. Thus, all travelers including those coming from China Mainland have to go through customs and immigration.

Chinese name: 澳门国际机场

Airport code: MFM

Website: www.macau-airport.gov.mo

The Macau International Airport began its operations in 1995 when Macau was still under Portuguese rule. Due to geographical considerations, the airport’s runway was strategically built on a strip of land in the sea, while the main terminal and air traffic facilities are located on Taipa Island, with two causeways connecting them to the runway. However, despite its smaller size compared to other airports in China, the airport can handle Boeing 747s and Antonov 124s.

Airlines that fly from Macau International Airport include:

AirAsia, AirAsia Philippines, Air Busan, Air China, Air Macau, Cebu Pacific, China Eastern Airlines, EVA Air, Jin Air, Mandarin Airlines, Nordwind, Philippine Airlines, Shanghai Airlines, Spring Airlines, Thai AirAsia, Thai Smile, Tiger Airways, TransAsia Airways, Vietnam Airlines, Xiamen Airlines

Macau International Airport is made up of only one small terminal from which all flights are served. Due to the smaller size of the airport, departures and arrivals are quick and convenient. Passengers who arrive at the airport usually clear through immigration in about 10 minutes. However, the airport is not open 24 hours, so passengers arriving later than 10 P.M. will not be able to access most of the airport facilities.

Transportation To/From the City

The Macau International Airport is well-connected on the ground, so traveling from there to various parts of the city and vice versa is easy and convenient. Trips are also generally quick and inexpensive given the small size of Macau.

Bus

Several bus services can transport passengers from the Macau International Airport to the Macau Peninsula, Taipa, Cotai, and Coloane, depending on where they are headed. Bus stops are located on the lower level of the airport, just outside the arrivals hall.

If you are traveling to the city center or the China Border Gate, take TCM Bus AP1

If you are traveling to Coloane, take TCM Bus 21

If you are traveling to Fai Chi Kei and Coloane, you may take the Transmac Bus 26

If you are going to the ferry terminal, you can take the Express Link Bus Service:

If you want to check into the Golden Crown China Hotel, which is just adjacent to the airport, and you are coming from the ferry terminal, or if you want to go to the airport from the ferry terminal, you can also take the free shuttle bus that takes the Golden Crown China Hotel to ferry terminal route.

Minibus

Minibuses are also available for those traveling from the airport to Taipa or Praia Grande, or vice versa. The minibusses do not stop at the airport; instead, they have to be flagged down. Their maximum capacity is just 16 persons. If you need to get down, just inform the driver.

If you are going to or coming from Taipa, take the TCM Minibus MT1, which circles Taipa and passes by the airport along the way.

If you are going to Praia Grande, take the TCM Minibus MT2:

Taxi

For those who prefer to take a taxi, there is a taxi stop waiting just outside the arrivals exit on the lower level. In general, taxis charge by meter. However, there is a MOP5 surcharge for trips going to/from the airport plus another MOP3 surcharge if you need to put luggage in the trunk of the taxi. There is also an additional MOP1 surcharge for every 50-second waiting time.

Passengers traveling from Taipa (where the airport is) to Coloane Islands and vice versa also have to pay an additional surcharge of MOP2. The same surcharge applies to trips from Macau City to Coloane Islands and vice versa.

Other than the surcharges, regular taxi rates are MOP13 for the first 1600 meters and MOP1.50 for every 230 meters succeeding. All taxis accept Hong Kong dollars and consider it of the same value as Macau patacas.

Typically, a taxi ride from the airport to the city center or the New Macau Ferry Terminal will cost MOP40-50 and will take just 10 to 15 minutes. A taxi ride from the airport to the China Border Gate, on the other hand, will cost MOP73 in the early morning with a surcharge for 2 suitcases already included.

There are two taxi companies in Macau, the black taxis and the yellow taxis.

Cross-Border Coach

Coach services are also available for those who are headed to onward destinations in China Mainland; these include Huadao, Guangzhou, Dongguan, Panyu, Gongbei Border Gate, and Hengquin Border. Buses leave regularly from 9:00 to 21:00.

Air Sea Link

For those transferring to Hong Kong or China Mainland immediately after arrival in MFM, there are two customs and one checkpoint procedure provided in the airport. This means that these passengers do not have to pass through Macau immigration. A bus shuttle that transfers them directly from the airport to the New Macau Ferry Terminal or the Taipa Temporary Ferry Terminal is available.
