Shenzhen Weather

Shenzhen is located south of the tropic of cancer, enjoying subtropics maritime climate, with mild weather conditions, abundant rainfall, and long duration of sunshine all year round. Summer in Shenzhen is very long, lasting 6 months. It’s not too hot in summer, nor too cold in winter. The annual average temperature is about 22.3℃. The highest temperature reaches 36.6℃ and the lowest temperature reaches 1.4℃. The annual average duration of sunshine is about 2,060 hours. The rainy season lasts from May to September, with annual mean precipitation of 1924.7 millimeters.

As Shenzhen is situated on the eastern shore of the Pearl River, it is always attacked by typhoons, from May to December. July and August are the hottest periods of Shenzhen, with the temperature ranging from 24 to 33℃ and the coldest periods fall in January and February.

Best Visiting Time

As Shenzhen enjoys a mild climate, without hot summer or cold winter, it’s suitable for visiting Shenzhen all year round.

August to September is ranked as the best period to visit Shenzhen, during which a number of celebrations are held there. What’s more, the beaches on the beautiful summer day attract numerous tourists to surf, paddle, and sunbathe, spending a memorable summer holiday.

Spring (Feb. 26th to April 22nd)

Spring in Shenzhen is the season with the fewest duration of sunshine. The weather during this period changes rapidly and strong convective weather is frequent. It is usually dry with little rainfall. For packing, long-sleeved coats and pants are necessary. 

Summer (April 23rd to Oct.24th)

In Shenzhen, summer lasts a really long period, from April to October, lasting half a year. The weather in summer is wet and warm, without extreme heat. In summer, a variety of celebrations are held in Shenzhen, and the beautiful beaches during this time attract numerous tourists to surf, paddle, and sunbathe, spending a memorable summer holiday, making summer the best period to visit Shenzhen. The hottest months fall in July and August, with the highest temperature of 31.67 ºC. The rainy season falls from May to September, with an annual rainfall of 1,608 millimeters on average. Due to its location, Shenzhen is often attacked by typhoons and some cool showers sometimes during this period. Tourists need to wear short-sleeved shirts, shorts, and sandals and bring sunglasses, sun hats, and sunscreen cream in order to prevent the sunshine. 

Autumn (Oct.25 to Jan. 12th)

The weather is cool and comfortable in autumn in Shenzhen, with a pleasant autumn breeze. The temperature ranges from 15.56 to 27 ºC. Autumn is ranked as the best season for enjoying fresh seafood. For packing, long-sleeved coats and sweaters are necessary.

Winter (Jan.13th to Feb.5th)

Winter is very short and warm in Shenzhen, lasting only 24days, with the temperature ranging from 14.44 to 19.44 ºC. It is cloudy sometimes and the north wind blows occasionally. For packing, warm clothes are necessary, such as cotton-padded jackets and shoes, down jackets and thermal underwear are needed.

Avoid Peak Traveling Periods

It is strongly suggested that tourists should avoid peak traveling periods in China, when there are numerous Chinese people traveling, bringing inconvenience to tourists, such as transportation and accommodation. During peak travel periods, it’s very difficult to get a flight or train ticket and Hotels raise their prices a lot. Shopping malls are crowded with people.

The peak travel periods include some traditional Chinese Festivals, including New Year’s Day (January 1st to 3rd), the Spring Festival (late January or early February), the May Day holiday ( May 1st to 3rd), and the National Day holidays (October 1st to 7th). Besides, China Hi-Tech Fair is held in Shenzhen from October 12th to 17th every year.
