West Street - A Foreign Street

Written by Fabio Updated Apr. 23, 2026

Located in the heart of Yangshuo, West Street stretches for 517 meters and is about 8 meters wide. Paved with flagstones, it winds gently in an "S" shape, lined with buildings that showcase traditional southern Chinese architecture.

West Street is a unique blend of Chinese heritage and modern Western influences. Often referred to as "Foreign Street," it attracts a high number of international visitors, giving it a lively, cosmopolitan atmosphere. Today, it stands as one of the most famous and vibrant streets in China. The street is lined with hundreds of souvenir shops, cafés, and restaurants, many of which are run by locals or international owners.

What to Eat on West Street

Beer Fish

Yangshuo Beer Fish is one of Guangxi's top ten classic dishes and the signature local specialty of Yangshuo. The fish has thick meat with few bones, a tender yet springy texture, and no muddy taste. After being pan-fried with the skin on, it turns crispy on the outside while remaining soft and delicate inside—flavorful, slightly sweet, and suitable for all ages.

Stuffed River Snails

Snail meat mixed with minced pork, mushrooms, and sometimes mint is finely chopped and stuffed back into the shells, then braised until fully infused with flavor. Fragrant, spicy, and pleasantly chewy—perfect with a cold beer.

Bamboo Tube Chicken & Bamboo Tube Rice

The chicken is tender and juicy, while the rice carries a subtle bamboo aroma. Steamed fresh in bamboo tubes, the flavors are light, fragrant, and pleasantly non-greasy.

Osmanthus Jelly Dessert

Handmade jelly topped with osmanthus syrup—refreshing and perfect for cooling down in summer.

Nightlife on West Street

West Street offers a wide range of bar styles—from folk-style chill bars and live band venues to lively party bars, fire-pit bars, and rooftop terraces. You can go from a quiet drink to a full-on dance night.

Most bars start opening after 19:00, peak around 21:00, reduce noise after 23:00, and usually close before midnight (slightly later on holidays). The middle section of the main street is the most crowded, while the side alleys are quieter and typically about 30% cheaper.
