The Longji Rice Terraces, also known as the Longsheng Rice Terraces or Dragon’s Backbone Rice Terraces, are one of the best soft-adventure experiences near Guilin. China Travel Tip: For most first-time visitors, we recommend either a relaxed Ping’an hike or a Dazhai/Jinkeng route with a private transfer. Families usually do best with a shorter guided walk, while active couples may prefer an overnight stay for sunrise or sunset views.

Understanding the Main Longji Rice Terrace Areas

Longji Rice Terraces cover several scenic areas and villages. The three most important areas for travelers are Ping’an, Dazhai/Jinkeng, and Longji Ancient Zhuang Village.

Ping’an Rice Terraces: Best for First-Time Visitors and Families

Ping’an is one of the most classic and accessible areas of Longji. It has well-known viewpoints, stone paths, local restaurants, and guesthouses. The trails here are easier to manage than the long-distance hikes between villages.

Ping’an is a good choice if:

The most famous viewpoints around Ping’an are Seven Stars with Moon, Nine Dragons, and Five Tigers. The walk between the village and the viewpoints includes uphill steps, but the route can be adjusted based on your pace.

China Travel Tip: Ping’an is usually our first recommendation for families who want a safe, scenic, and not-too-difficult Longji experience.

Dazhai/Jinkeng Rice Terraces: Best for Bigger Views and Sunrise

Dazhai/Jinkeng is often better for travelers who want wider terrace views, sunrise or sunset photography, and a quieter mountain atmosphere. The scenery here feels more expansive, and the area is popular with photographers and active travelers.

Dazhai/Jinkeng is a good choice if:

Popular places in this area include Tiantou Village, Golden Buddha Peak, and West Hill Music. Some viewpoints can be reached by hiking, while Golden Buddha Peak also has a cable car option, which makes the area more flexible for families or older travelers.

China Travel Tip: For couples, we often recommend staying one night in the Dazhai/Jinkeng area. You can enjoy sunset, a quiet village evening, and sunrise the next morning.

Longji Ancient Zhuang Village: Best for Culture and Gentle Hiking

Longji Ancient Zhuang Village is a good choice for travelers who want a softer hiking route with more cultural atmosphere. The village is home to Zhuang minority families and offers a quieter introduction to Longji’s farming and village life.

This area is especially suitable if:

1. Longji Ancient Zhuang Village to Ping’an

You can visit Longji Ancient Zhuang Village first, learn about local Zhuang culture, and then walk toward Ping’an for classic terrace views. This route is a good fit for families who want children to experience the countryside without becoming too tired.

The Ping’an to Dazhai hike is one of the most complete hiking experiences in Longji. It connects two major terrace areas and passes through villages, forested paths, stone steps, and open rice fields.

This route is beautiful but physically demanding. It is not recommended for young children, elderly travelers, or visitors who are not used to long mountain walks. Weather can also make the trail more difficult, especially after rain.

Best Time to Hike Longji Rice Terraces

Longji Rice Terraces are beautiful in different ways throughout the year. The best time depends on what kind of scenery you want to see.

Season What You’ll See Best For

Hiking Longji with Kids, as a Couple, or Solo

Longji Rice Terraces with Kids

Yes, you can visit Longji Rice Terraces with children, but you need to choose the right route. The full Ping’an to Dazhai hike is usually too long for young children, but shorter walks in Ping’an or Longji Ancient Zhuang Village can be very enjoyable.

Best family-friendly options:

Longji can also be educational for children. They can see how rice is grown, walk through minority villages, try bamboo rice, and experience a different side of rural China.

Longji Rice Terraces for Couples

Longji is a wonderful destination for couples who enjoy nature, photography, and quiet scenery. Compared with a quick sightseeing stop, an overnight stay gives you a more romantic and memorable experience.

Best ideas for couples:

Longji Rice Terraces for Solo Travelers

Solo travelers can visit Longji, especially the easier routes around Ping’an or Dazhai. However, we do not recommend doing long village-to-village hikes alone, particularly in rainy, foggy, or low-season conditions.

Some paths are not clearly marked, and the phone signal may not always be reliable in mountain areas. A local guide is helpful for safety, navigation, and cultural understanding.

FAQs About Hiking Longji Rice Terraces

Are Longji Rice Terraces worth visiting?

Yes. Longji Rice Terraces are one of the most scenic countryside destinations near Guilin. They are especially worth visiting if you enjoy mountain views, village culture, photography, or light hiking. For many travelers, Longji is a memorable contrast to Guilin’s rivers and Yangshuo’s karst scenery.

How hard is the Longji Rice Terraces hike?

It depends on the route. Short walks around Ping’an or Golden Buddha Peak can be easy to moderate, while the full Ping’an to Dazhai hike is challenging and usually takes 5–6 hours. Most travelers can enjoy Longji if they choose a route that matches their fitness level.

Which is better, Ping’an or Dazhai?

Ping’an is better for first-time visitors, families, and travelers with limited time. Dazhai is better for bigger views, sunrise, sunset, and a more in-depth Longji experience. If you only have one day, Ping’an is often easier. If you can stay overnight, Dazhai/Jinkeng may be more rewarding.

Can children hike Longji Rice Terraces?

Yes, children can enjoy Longji if the route is chosen carefully. We recommend shorter walks in Ping’an or Longji Ancient Zhuang Village rather than long hikes between villages. The paths include many stone steps, so strollers are not practical.

Can elderly travelers visit Longji Rice Terraces?

Yes, but the route should be planned carefully. Elderly travelers may prefer shorter walks, private transfer, and the cable car option in Jinkeng. Avoid long hikes and slippery paths after rain.

Is one day enough for Longji Rice Terraces?

One day is enough to see the highlights of one main area, such as Ping’an or Dazhai. However, if you want sunrise, sunset, photography, or a slower pace, staying overnight is much better.

Should I stay overnight in Longji Rice Terraces?

Staying overnight is recommended if you want a quieter experience, better light for photography, or sunrise and sunset views. It is especially suitable for couples, photographers, and travelers who prefer not to rush.

Do I need a guide for Longji Rice Terraces?

A guide is not always necessary for short viewpoint walks, but it is recommended for longer hikes, family trips, rainy days, and village-to-village routes such as Ping’an to Dazhai. A guide can help with navigation, timing, safety, and local culture.

Can I visit Longji Rice Terraces from Yangshuo?

Yes, but Yangshuo is farther from Longji than Guilin. A private transfer is usually the most convenient option if you want to travel from Yangshuo to Longji, especially if you plan to continue to Guilin or stay overnight in Longji.

What is the best month to visit Longji Rice Terraces?

The best months are usually from late May to mid-October. Late May to early June is good for water-filled terraces, July and August are green, and September to early October is best for golden rice fields. Avoid China’s National Day holiday from October 1 to 7 if possible.
