Huangshan Hot Springs

Written by Vivian Updated Aug. 27, 2021

The Huangshan Hot Springs is regarded as one of the Four Wonders of the Yellow Mountains along with the strangely-shaped pines, oddly-shaped rocks, and the sea of clouds. Taking a hot spring spa is a good way to relax, especially after hiking in the mountains.

There are three hot springs in Huangshan. The most famous one is Piaoxue (Snow) Hot Spring, which is located at the foot of the Yellow Mountains. The other two are Fengda Hot Spring, which is 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the Yellow Mountains, and Zui (Drunk) Hot Spring, which is in the downtown area.

Fengda Hot Spring is mainly used by Chinese people instead of international travelers. Zui Hot Spring closed in 2018. This article will focus on Piaoxue Hot Spring.

Facts about Piaoxue Hot Spring

Features of Piaoxue Hot Spring

The Huangshan Hot Springs has a history of more than 1,000 years and has been developed since the Tang Dynasty. They have been called the “Tang Springs” (汤泉, tāng quán) and “Cinnabar Springs” (朱砂泉, zhū shā quán) in ancient times.

Deng Xiaoping, Chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, visited Huangshan in the summer of 1979. He wrote four words, “天下名泉” (a world-famous spring), at Piaoxue Hot Spring, which earned a good reputation for the scenic area.

Located at 650 meters (2,133 feet) above sea level, the average annual temperature of the Huangshan Hot Springs is 42ºC (108ºF). The water is very clear and contains rich minerals. It can not only relax your muscles and smooth your skin but also has a therapeutic effect for the treatment of metabolic disorders and cardiovascular disease.

Piaoxue Hot Spring has about 30 pools with different scents and healing properties, such as rose, milk, coffee, wine, tea, Chinese medicine, and so on. The most interesting one is the fish pool (this costs an extra 30 CNY per person). You will enjoy the little fishes nibbling at and cleaning your skin in the pool. It is a good way to feel refreshed and recover after hiking in the mountains.

Tips Before Soaking in the Hot Spring

1. Having a hot spring spa is a good way to relax all year round. November to March is the best time to try this.

2. Many people prefer to take a spa in the evening. We suggest you enjoy the hot spring during the day to avoid the crowds.

3. No free swimsuits are available so you are advised to take your own. You can buy one at the hot spring but the price is higher than those found in the supermarkets.

4. You will be supplied with free towels, shampoo, shower gel, brushes, flip-flops, a hairdryer, and lockers at the hot spring.
