What to Pack for a Huangshan Hiking Tour
With your departure date approaching swiftly, you may be wondering what to pack for you Huangshan hiking tour. Should you bring a suitcase or just a backpack? Should you wear warm clothes in summer? What would you need to pack for an overnight trip? We have prepared a handy list to help you pack for your perfect hiking tour.
1. Bag
You will have to climb many stairs while hiking in the mountains. We suggest you travel with a light pack and leave any heavy luggage at the foot of the hill or in the downtown area to save energy. Taking a bag is better than carrying a suitcase; a backpack is more comfortable to carry.
2. Clothes
Most attractions in the Huangshan Scenic Area are more than 1,500 m (4,920 ft) above sea level. Thus, temperatures tend to vary significantly between the foot and top of the mountains, and between day and night. If you plan to see the sunrise or sunset in the mountains, bring warm clothes, even if you are visiting in the summer.
You may sweat a lot while hiking, so it’s best to carry breathable and quick-dry clothes. Wear layers that you can quickly put on and take off.
Here we have listed some choices suitable for the different seasons. It is advisable to double-check the real-time weather before departure. Alternatively, feel free to contact us and tell us your queries. Our travel advisors will guide you with more detailed information.

3. Shoes
You are expected to climb and hike more than 5 km (3 mi) every day on the mountains, and much of the path will consist of steep and narrow stairs. Wearing comfortable shoes is very important for the Huangshan hiking tour. Do wear trekking shoes or sneakers and carry some clean socks.
Do not wear dress shoes, high heels, or sandals.
4. Rain Gear
With an annual precipitation of more than 2,400 mm (94 in), the Huangshan Mountains receive plenty of rainfall. The area receives rainfall for more than 180 days every year. Moreover, the weather in the mountains can be unpredictable. There can be heavy rain on the top while it is sunny in the foothills.
Carry a disposable raincoat and waterproof backpack whether it rains or not. Umbrellas are not recommended as it is inconvenient to use an umbrella while hiking in the rain. Also, they are not safe to use when there are high winds.
5. Food
Food and drinks in the Yellow Mountains are limited and are quite expensive. Prices are about three times higher than in the downtown area because people have to carry everything up to the top, which takes time and labor.
You are advised to bring some necessary supplies in case the food on the mountain does not match your taste. Chocolates, sausages, slices of bread, and cookies are recommended.
6. Other Sundry Items
Toiletries: toothbrush, toothpaste, and shower gel
Tip: Hotels in the mountains do not provide disposable toiletries.
Hiking equipment: map, hiking stick, and gloves
Tip: A hiking pole or two can relieve some of the stress on the knees while hiking in the mountains.
Sun protection: sunscreen, sunglass, and sunhat
Tip: Ultraviolet rays may be powerful in the mountains, especially in summer and autumn.
Currency: CNY cash
Tip: some stores on the mountain only accept cash.
