Where to Stay in Huangshan

Written by Vivian Updated Jul. 5, 2021

Huangshan is a popular tourist city, which includes many famous attractions, such as Huangshan Scenic Area, Hongcun Village, Tunxi Ancient Street, and so on. Since these attractions are in different regions, you must stay in Huangshan for at least one day if you would like to visit some of them.

Compared with other tourist cities, such as Beijing or Shanghai, hotel choices in Huangshan are limited. There are very few international star-rated hotels. Considering the limited choice and driving distance between the attractions, the hotel location is more important than the hotel brand. This article will tell you where to stay in Huangshan.

Stay in Tunxi (Downtown)

If you arrive in Huangshan in the late evening or if you plan to catch an early flight/train, staying for one night in Tunxi is recommended.

Tunxi District is in Huangshan city center. The airport, train station, and long-distance bus station are located in this area. You can get convenient transfers to the Yellow Mountains, Hongcun Village, and other attractions from there.

Here are some hotel recommendations for you.

Stay in the Yellow Mountains

If you are fond of hiking or if would like to see a sunrise and sunset, you are advised to stay for 1 or 2 nights in the mountains.

Huangshan Scenic Area is one of the most popular attractions in China. While traveling in Huangshan, all travelers will visit the Yellow Mountains and most of them will stay for at least 1 night in the mountains. With rich experience, our guide will customize the route to cover all of the mountain highlights to make the most of your time. If you prefer a worry-free tour, feel free to contact us.

Huangshan Accommendation Map

Meals and accommodation in the Yellow Mountains are comparatively simple and extremely expensive. The prices are about three times higher than those in the downtown area because people have to carry everything up to the top, which takes more time and labor.

Currently, there are only six hotels and two hostels in the mountains. Because of the remoteness and limited choices, tourists may find that the hotel facilities are not very good, especially the basic breakfasts and lower level of service.

Please note that the hotels are in high demand during public holidays and weekends (Fridays and Saturdays) so the rates will increase during these times.

Here are some hotel recommendations for you.

Xihai Hotel (5-Star)

Note: Xihai Hotel has two buildings. The newer one is ranked as 5-star and is in the south (A area). The other building is in the north (B area).

Shilin Hotel (4-Star)

Beihai Hotel (4-Star)

Beihai Hotel Beihai Hotel

Baiyun Hotel (4-Star)

Paiyunlou Hotel (3-Star)

Yupinglou Hotel (3-Star)

Note: Unlike the above hotels, Huangshan Yupinglou Hotel is located at the front of the mountains. It is the farthest hotel from Yungu Cable Car.

Stay in Tangkou (at the Foot of the Yellow Mountains)

If you arrive in Huangshan in the late evening and would like to go up the Yellow Mountains in the early morning, or if you wish to save some money, staying for one night in Tangkou Town is a good choice.

Huangshan Scenic Area is not in the downtown area — it takes about 1 hour’s drive from the city center to get there.

If this is your first visit to Huangshan, it is highly recommended to enter the scenic area from Huangshan South Gate as most of the popular attractions are near this gate. Huangshan South Gate is located in Tangkou Town and most travelers get out of their bus/car there.

Here is our hotel recommendation:

Huangshan Nuanshanding Hotel (Boutique Hotel)

Note: It takes about 10 minutes to walk to Huangshan Scenic Area Transfer Center where you are required to take a shuttle bus to the cableway stations at Yungu Temple or Ciguang Pavilion.

Stay in the Village

If you would like to be close to nature or if you prefer Chinese-style hostels in the countryside, staying for one or two nights in the village is recommended.

Pig's Inn Pig's Inn

Besides the Yellow Mountains, many beautiful villages in Huangshan are worth visiting, such as Hongcun Village and Xidi Village. Here is our hotel recommendation:

Pig's Inn (Boutique Hotel)

Pig’s Inn includes three hostel branches: Xidi Branch, Bishan Branch, and Laoyouchang Branch. All of these hostels have been reconstructed from old buildings by an artist couple.

Although the conditions at Pig’s Inn cannot be compared with those of standard hotels, it is a good chance to have a more special experience. You can cycle on the road to the countryside in the morning to breathe in the fresh air if the weather is good.
