1. Visit Zhangjiajie National Forest Park: Avatar Mountains

With its classic rocky tower scenery and natural wonders, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park has become an adventure spot for increasing numbers of travelers. Here are three things not to be missed in this area:

1) Taking a cable car up to the Avatar Hallelujah Mountains in the Yuanjiajie area.
2) Seeing the cloud and mist at the top of Tianzi Mountain.
3) Visiting the Old House Area between Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain to experience the lesser-known beauty of nature and folk culture.

The park offers stunning views with unique mountains, refreshing air, and clear water, however, watch out for the wild monkeys! Hold on tight to any bags and do not have any food poking out of pockets or in your hand, in case wild monkeys come to look for food- yes, they may “rob” you.

Tianmen Mountain, Sky Door Mountain in English, is named for its shape- it has a huge hole through which you can see the sky. At a height of 1,519 meters (4,983 feet), Tianmen is the highest peak in the Zhangjiajie area. There are also three things you should not miss:

1) Taking the world’s longest mountain cable car up to the top of Tianmen Mountain and shooting aerial views of the amazing 99-turn mountain road.
2) Walking along the terrifying glass-bottomed walkway circling the vertical cliffs.
3) Trekking the 999 steps up to Tianmen Cave, a giant natural water-eroded cave.

5. Relaxing at Fenghuang Ancient Town: Back to China’s Earlier Time

Fenghuang Ancient Town is one of the most famous ancient towns in China and is praised as the most beautiful small city in China. After a lot of walking in Zhangjiajie, it is worth the 4 hours’ drive to enjoy the beautiful Tuojiang, traditional Tujia stilted buildings, and folk culture of local Miao people in Fenghuang Ancient Town. The views are so different during day and night so it is recommended to plan a stay to see both.
