Shanghai Disneyland

Written by Vivian Updated Oct. 31, 2023

Shanghai Disneyland is a theme park located in Chuansha County, Pudong New District, Shanghai, China. Opened in June 2016, it is the first Disney park in China's Mainland and the second in all of Asia. The park includes 6 themed lands.

Best Time to Visit Shanghai Disneyland

You'd better go to the park during the weekdays and avoid Chinese public holidays, such as Labor Day (May 1st to 5th), National Day (October 1st to 7th), and the Chinese New Year.

Highlights in Shanghai Disneyland

Explore the Lands

Spend time exploring the different lands within Shanghai Disneyland, including Mickey Avenue, Gardens of Imagination, Fantasyland, Adventure Isle, Treasure Cove, and Tomorrowland. Each land offers unique attractions, shows, and dining options.

The Tallest and Largest Iconic Castle

A breathtaking princess's castle stands before visitors when they enter Shanghai Disneyland Park. There is a castle in every Disneyland Park as a signal. In the heart of the castle, a grand winding staircase will lead visitors to the adventure of wandering in the fairy tale.

This castle is the landmark of Shanghai Disneyland Park and the largest and tallest one among castles of the other five Disneyland Parks.

What's the difference with other castles: a lot of interactive activities and performances in it, complete with dining and entertainment.

Pirates of the Caribbean

Experience the thrilling Pirates of the Caribbean ride, which takes you on a high-seas adventure with Captain Jack Sparrow.

Tron Lightcycle Power Run

Enjoy the exhilarating Tron Lightcycle Power Run, a futuristic roller coaster ride that offers a unique and immersive experience.

Parades and Fireworks

Watch the impressive parades, such as the Mickey's Storybook Express, and the nightly fireworks display that illuminates the skies above the Enchanted Storybook Castle.

Walt Disney Theater

If visitors get a little tired of play facilities, they can go to the Walt Disney Theater in the center of Retail, Catering, and Entertainment Zoon. The theater is a Broadway-style theater providing 1,200 seats.

In the theater, visitors will watch "The Lion King" which is the highest-gross Broadway show of all time and has been performed for 17 years. The Lion King will make its official debut in Mandarin at Shanghai Disneyland Resort.

How Big is Shanghai Disneyland?

The approximate size of Shanghai Disneyland is around 963 acres (3.91 square kilometers).

To put it in perspective, It is 3 times bigger than the Hong Kong Disneyland Park, and also larger than Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California, and Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Florida.

How Many Rides in Shanghai Disneyland?

Shanghai Disneyland features numerous rides and attractions for visitors to enjoy. While the specific number of rides may evolve as the park makes additions or changes, as of my knowledge, there are currently around 25 rides and attractions in Shanghai Disneyland.

These attractions range from thrilling roller coasters like the Tron Lightcycle Power Run and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train to immersive experiences like Pirates of the Caribbean and Peter Pan's Flight. Each ride offers its unique themes, stories, and experiences, providing a wide variety of options for guests to enjoy throughout their visit.

Shanghai Disneyland Travel Tips

1. Carry a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the day. There are water fountains available where you can refill your bottle. Alternatively, you can purchase bottled water from various food stalls and shops within the park.

2. Consider making dining reservations in advance, especially for popular restaurants or character dining experiences.

3. Arriving early can help you beat the crowds and enjoy popular attractions with shorter wait times.

4. Take advantage of the FastPass system to minimize wait times for some of the most popular rides.

5. Try visiting the park on weekdays when it tends to be less crowded compared to weekends.

6. Shanghai Disneyland offers discounted tickets for children based on height. Children below a certain height (usually around 1.4 meters or 4' 7") are eligible for child-priced tickets.

7. If traveling with children of different heights or ages, take advantage of the Rider Swap program. This allows one adult to wait with a child who can't ride, while others in the party experience the attraction. Then, the adults can switch roles without waiting in line again.
