Winter clothes! Long trousers, boots, long shirts, a coat, gloves, extra layers, and a hat. It gets cold and you probably don’t want to get caught unprepared in a winter maelstrom. This is maybe the one month you won’t need a rain jacket! But don’t forget the layers.

Is December a good time to visit Zhangjiajie?

Zhangjiajie in Winter

It depends on you. If you like the cold, dry weather of winter, then yes. If you would rather be sweltering under the summer sun, then you probably wouldn’t like December in Zhangjiajie.

The snow-covered peaks are beautiful, and for most visitors to China, a once-in-a-lifetime sight to see. However, usually, the snow is light, so if you want to see the icy wonderland, you need to get an hour right when it’s snowing, or soon after. Which means you need to be comfortable hiking in the cold.

The tranquility of the park is especially notable in December, as it’s low tourist season- this means prices are low and you won’t have to battle any hordes to get where you want to.

The National Forest Park at Zhangjiajie is a great thing to see. You can meet the monkeys with an extra layer of fur for the cold and snow, the tree branches hanging low, and icy peaks and trees. It’s a beautiful experience if you can handle the cold.
