Zhangjiajie in January

Weather in Zhangjiajie is seasonal, and thus varies month-to-month. January weather is cold, icy, and frequently snowy. Although there is less rainfall than other months, it retains a cold humidity and visitors can expect ground ice and snowfall. Nighttime weather and weather at the mountain peaks are much colder than during the day.

Visitors should expect a much different experience if they visit in the winter versus the spring or summer. Nonetheless, Zhangjiajie is in the monsoon climate zone of central China, so expect humid and rainy weather year-round.

Wearing a windbreaker coat

1. A windbreaker/insulated coat. You will need something for the cold weather and rain/snow. Make sure to bring a coat with a strong outer shell that can repel water, wind, and keep you sufficiently warm.

2. Hat, gloves, and scarf. Especially if you plan on ascending the peaks, you may need your hands for some of the hiking, and you won’t want to get them wet on the freezing earth.

3. Thick socks and hiking boots with good traction. There may be a lot of snow, and the soil can be wet and hard to get good footing on, even without snow. The rain may freeze after hitting the ground at night as well, so be prepared for some ice.
