Northeast China enters early winter in November, marked by sharply dropping temperatures, frequent cold-air surges, and multiple snowfall events. The further north you go, the colder it becomes, with the seasonal chill intensifying from south to north.

What to Wear in the Northwestern Part of China in November

For traveling in Northeast China in November, prioritize "multi-layer insulation + windproof and waterproof protection."

Wear quick-dry thermal base layers, add a thick sweater, fleece, or lightweight down mid-layer, and finish with a long, heavy down coat (with at least 70% down content). Pair it with fleece-lined waterproof ski pants—a must for mountain areas and Snow Town.

Choose high-top, fleece-lined snow boots with strong grip, plus thick wool socks. Essential accessories include a trapper hat, windproof face mask, waterproof ski gloves, and goggles. Bring heat packs and crampons for icy paths.

In Southwest China, November weather varies dramatically due to complex terrain. Yunnan alone can feel like “a different climate in every city,” with huge north–south temperature contrasts.

Guizhou is cold, damp, and often foggy, with average temperatures around 9–15°C and short sunshine hours.

The Sichuan Basin and parts of Panxi stay relatively mild, while the western Sichuan Plateau turns much colder, with a high chance of cold rain, snow, and icy conditions.

Western Sichuan and Northwest Yunnan High-Altitude Regions - Wear thermal quick-dry base layers paired with a thick sweater or fleece, plus fleece-lined thermal leggings and waterproof ski / softshell pants. For outerwear, choose a long, thick down jacket or ski jacket. Footwear should be high-top insulated snow boots. Bring a trapper hat, gloves, and scarf, along with hand warmers and ice cleats (Jiuzhaigou may see snowfall late in the month; Shangri-La temperatures can drop below –4°C).

Chengdu, Chongqing, Guiyang Basin and Hill Regions - a light thermal base layer with a knit top or thin sweater, and fleece-lined jeans or casual pants. For outer layers, choose a windproof jacket, lightweight down jacket, or wool coat (opt for water-resistant fabrics in Guiyang due to its cold, damp climate). Wear fleece-lined ankle boots or sneakers, and bring a scarf and a foldable umbrella (Chongqing and Guiyang experience more rain and higher humidity).

Xishuangbanna - During the day, wear a short-sleeve T-shirt with lightweight long pants or a long skirt (breathable and sun-protective). Add a light jacket for mornings and evenings (temperatures can drop to ~15°C). Footwear can be sandals or canvas shoes. Must-haves: sun hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen—the weather is sunny, dry, and warm, with highs reaching 27°C.

China Weather in November in Eastern Region

Generally warmer with little rainfall, but temperatures fluctuate significantly. Frequent winds and gusts are common, and the region alternates between cold waves and brief warm spells known as the "Little Spring of October."

Where to go in China in November

November marks the beginning of China’s winter travel peak. Cities in North and Northeast China have already seen snowfall, making winter outdoor activities like skiing, building snowmen, and snowball fights possible. Since it’s only the start of the peak season, hotel prices have not yet surged. This makes it an excellent time to visit northern destinations such as Harbin, Beijing, and other winter cities.

Harbin

Saint Sophia Cathedral is one of Harbin’s most iconic landmarks, now newly reopened after extensive restoration. Its Byzantine-style domes covered with a light layer of snow make it especially photogenic, while the restored interior murals bring its history back to life.

The Harbin Siberian Tiger Park is the world’s largest breeding base for Siberian tigers. In November, the tigers are particularly active in the cool weather. It’s recommended to visit around 10:00 or 14:00 to watch the feeding session. You can take the safari-style vehicle to observe the tigers up close, and may even capture dramatic moments like a tiger leaping for food.

Beijing enters its low travel season in November, making it an excellent time to explore the city. You can visit major attractions like the Forbidden City at more affordable prices and with far fewer crowds, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the charm of the imperial capital and the everyday life of its hutongs. Early-winter scenery and a few seasonal events also make the experience especially pleasant.

In the Forbidden City, the red palace walls paired with the last golden ginkgo leaves create a nostalgic atmosphere, while the Corner Tower reflected in the moat is a classic postcard view. To avoid crowds, it’s recommended to enter from the Shenwumen (North Gate), relax in the sun at the Cining Palace Garden in the afternoon, and head to Jingshan Park before 4 pm to climb to the top for a panoramic view of the entire Forbidden City.
